In this volume, our protagonist dodges age gap trope, the lost pet trope, and the supernatural/Halloween trope.

It appears the main character is still figuring out the rules.

Whenever the MC breaks the fourth wall, I have to wonder… What is the point? And not in a mean way, I mean will this mean we’re going to keep racing through these tropes, or is there a bigger story around the fact he knows this isn’t real? Especially since he gets his own confession, unable to avoid it. We’ll see, since I can’t seem to give up on this series. 3 out of 5.

Iku has been in Tokyo for 2 months and is content with his otaku lifestyle. The most excitement he is forced to deal with is his ability to see ghosts. One in particular, Mimori, follows him home. As they grow closer, Iku knows Mimori will have to eventually move on.

This was cute. It’s a little slow, and I didn’t feel like I got to know these people as deeply as I’d like to, but this felt like a nice setup for a climax later. Iku is smitten pretty quickly, and when you think it’s going to be bittersweet, things get very… Convenient is a good word for it. Not bad, but nothing really new here. It’s not smutty as sex is implied, not graphic. 3 out of 5.

In this volume, the tropes of paranormal, sports festival, cats, and punk characters are explored.

Our main character is kinda interested in Ayato’s budding romance, but other than that, I think my issue isn’t that he’s a straight guy dodging BL tropes; it’s that, in general, he’s detached from everything going on around him. I get this overall “blah” feeling. If he doesn’t care, why should I? 2 out of 5.

Our main character still side steps typical boys love tropes.

This reads like a sampler volume of a bunch of different romance comics that you’d get as promotional material. Then you decide which series you wanna read to learn more. A concept like this could really be something silly and fun, hopefully while not being exploitative, but for now, this is just dull. 2 out of 5.

Shinobu and Hikaru have moved from one night stand to a more exclusive relationship. When Hikaru’s mentor – Osuke Ikurumi –  shows up, Shinobu is scared that Hikaru’s new interest in men will lead him to fall for the mentor Hikaru still idolises.

Okay, I’m spoiling it! This volume keeps up with the light tone, and Osuke is genuinely looking out for Hikaru and cares about him as a mentor. He wants Hikaru to be happy like a father figure coming in to make sure Shinobu is a guy good enough for his son. This gives Shinobu the push to make things more official. I hope there’s more of this series so we get more of them as an official couple. There is a tiny bit of angst, some cute and funny bits, and of course, plenty of smut. 4 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “Monster and Ghost” Vol. 1, by Himemiko

Koton Tsubaki is ostracized at school due to his violent past but there’s one being that doesn’t care: Yuuki Kabuto, a ghost that decides to follow him around.

I guess that’s as good a reason as any to refuse to move on. 

The pace of this feels off somehow, but for a boys’ love comic, it’s SO sad. It gets dark and violent. Tsubaki is just chronically misunderstood and since Kabuto is dead, he can see beyond the tough exterior and eases Tsubaki’s loneliness. The art is fantastic and there’s no smut. The story does suck you in so I do want to read volume 2. 3.7 out of 5.

Ichigi is a quiet person who is considered gloomy. He has a crush on the outgoing and popular Odajima. When, at the behest of his worried mother, Ichigi tries a matchmaking service, he is matched with Odajima. He doesn’t think someone so popular would ever be into him, so they agree to a one-year trial of living together.

This makes up for the last yaoi I read. It may have the familiar tropes, including the misheard conversations, wild assumptions, and miscommunications that lead to a temporary separation but they’re cute. We don’t get too deep into backstory but I enjoyed this so much more than Betrothed one. They have interactions that aren’t smut to build some chemistry and the smutty scenes aren’t overpowering the rest of the book. It does have the superdeformed art that tries to be cute but comes off as creepy to me. 3 out of 5.

Leo is the son of a wealthy family who also adopted Sui after his parents died. They were raised together and are expected to marry, but Sui is hesitant to make that commitment despite their close relationship.

Okay, so that’s the synopsis, but it’s more like they fuck all the time, and when they’re not fucking, they wanna fuck or talk about how much they wanna fuck. The “pressure” to get married is barely a plot point. While I can get behind a “Plot? What plot?” smutfest, this was boring after a while and uncomfortable in some parts. I feel bad not enjoying this more because the art is great. If you want straight-up smut, this is it. It has the feel of a simple porn flick, breezing by anything that isn’t sex. 2 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “My Beautiful Man” Vol. 1, by Yuu Nagira & Megumi Kitano

Hira has a stutter and has been bullied for it. Now in the second year of high school, it continues with a group of boys led by Kiyoi, who make him do their school chores, buy them snacks, and fetch things for them. Hira lets it happen because he has a crush on Kiyoi.

I guess this is going to turn out that Kiyoi isn’t so bad, but for now, everyone but Hira and his mother (we don’t see much of his father) are so damn unlikable. And Hira is what the kids these days would call a simp; accepting whatever shitty treatment inflicted on him because he’s in love with Kiyoi, and it’s just so sad to watch. The poor kid is miserable, and Kiyoi is a jerk. I don’t even want them to get together. I want someone else to make Hira smile for once and stick up for him. And of course, there is some sort of secret Kiyoi is hiding from his douchbag friends. This volume is suggestive but not explicit. 2.9 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “Feigning Fox with a Face Full of Flowers” by Ryo Ayamine

Takeru returns to his grandfather’s home after his death to take care of the property, only to be shocked when a fox spirit named Kazune comes to claim the promise Takeru’s grandfather made to the spirit.

This has all the foundations of a decent story, but it felt bland to me, even with all the smut. The setup of the back story with Takeru and his bond with his grandfather and Kazune’s shitty childhood brings us two characters who just want to be loved, but from the very first time they’re together, they don’t feel right. It’s also a bit rapey? Little dubious consent happening here? The sex in general gives off this cold, biological reaction rather than attraction or connection. I totally understand the trope to get to the smut as quick as possible (and it’s quite graphic), but this rang hollow for me. Maybe it needed more time to tell its story. 2 out of 5.
