Takeru returns to his grandfather’s home after his death to take care of the property, only to be shocked when a fox spirit named Kazune comes to claim the promise Takeru’s grandfather made to the spirit.

This has all the foundations of a decent story, but it felt bland to me, even with all the smut. The setup of the back story with Takeru and his bond with his grandfather and Kazune’s shitty childhood brings us two characters who just want to be loved, but from the very first time they’re together, they don’t feel right. It’s also a bit rapey? Little dubious consent happening here? The sex in general gives off this cold, biological reaction rather than attraction or connection. I totally understand the trope to get to the smut as quick as possible (and it’s quite graphic), but this rang hollow for me. Maybe it needed more time to tell its story. 2 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “Touch Within the Abyss” by Moyori Mori

The one time Chinatsu hesitated with a target, it cost his older brother his life and left a witness, a blind boy named Kasumi. Years later, Chinatsu meets Kasumi again.

This is a cozy read. Chinatsu’s profession as a hitman isn’t at the forefront, so the violence is heavily implied, not explicit. The art is dreamy and soft when it needs to be and just dark enough when there’s tension or darker stuff happening in the story. Everything is very effective in making you care about the couple and want to see them happy. Heck, even Kasumi’s family is supportive. A lot of these stories would either lean into the violence or make the disabled person miserable because their family is awful, but nope. Not this time. If you’re looking for something quick to read without much smut (it’s off “screen” so to speak), this is just a nice read. 4 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “Megumi & Tsugumi” Vol. 5, by Mitsuru Si

Megumi’s father’s dislike of omegas still looms over his relationship with Tsugumi and he’s determined to win his father over, only to end up tricked into a blind date with Inami.

I actually like how the sex scenes are almost like an afterthought to the couple’s goal to make Megumi’s father accept their relationship. Tsugumi is so earnest and deadpan, bringing a comedic element into all the drama. He’s not too doofy – which can also be fun – he’s just the type to know what he wants to do and doesn’t have all the hangups of those around him.  It’s refreshing since Megumi frets so much. And Tsugumi has awesome dads. I love when they’re included. 4 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “Someday I’ll Fall for You” Vol. 2, by Tomo Kurahashi

Now that all the feelings have been revealed, Chiaki and Kazuma are dating in secret and Kazuma wonders if it’s time to take things further in their relationship, navigates how to be a couple when they’re still pretending to be friends, and what their future will be after high school.

While there’s plenty of smut in this volume, the rest is just delightful and sweet. Chiaki is a little bean who’s just so damn in love and Kazuma earnestly wants to be happy. They’re adorable and despite how I kinda wish the characters were older, I can acknowledge the differing consent ages and how it’s not really made for me. It’s for older teens to relate to. I’d like to see their story continue into adulthood to see how their relationship is in the future but this will probably just stick with the high school stuff. 4 out of 5.

At 29, Shishikura has been trying to find his soulmate but watching all his friends get married without any luck for his own love life. As he waits for a matchmaking service to assist, his heat comes on when only his surly coworker, Kotani, is around to help him. But will a single night of passion turn into more or will they continue to feud with each other.

Yeah, Kotani is the worst for awhile but of course, these two knuckleheads are meant to be. This is clearly not spoilers for anyone with any passing experience with yaoi or especially omegaverse stories. As an omegaverse, there is plenty of smut involving heats and such and it is very detailed. This is absolutely adults only. Omegaverse isn’t usually my jam but this was ight on the trope that omegas are treated like shit. There’s one offhand comment but other than that, I’m glad the story didn’t go there. It’s more about how our main couple are snippy with each other. 3.5 out of 5.

Kazuma, Chiaki, and Tomoe have all been friends since childhood. Kazuma and Chiaki were raised like brothers but the feelings between them are more than just siblings.

This manga wastes no time getting to the smut. It appears in this case they’re intimate with each other but Chiaki has caught feels while Kazuma dates girls. Now, these boys are third-year students which can me 18 years old so Imma stick with that despite feeling like that’s still gross for me to be reading (that’s why I’m partial to the ones with older characters like My Dearest Patrolman, Don’t Call Me Daddy, or Old Fashioned Cupcake). My tastes in romance in general have sorta aged as I have so, this gives me a bit of the ick even though the general trope and romance in this are cute. At that age, this would have been awesome for me. The art is breezy and calm which is nice for this low angst love story. 3.7 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “My Dearest Patrolman” Vol. 2, by Niyama

Shin and Seiji are now living together and while Shin is over the moon to finally be with his long time crush, Seiji wonders if he’s able to satisfy his younger partner.

Now that they’re together, this volume is them learning more about each other and getting used to being a couple. It’s sweet and spicy the way a new couple should be and it’s just adorable how besotted Shin is. Seiji’s insecurities are relatable and handled well but quickly since there are a bunch of scenes to get through: an overnight trip, Shin working on New Year’s, Seiji getting a cold; the usual quick little plot points. Also, cats make well timed appearances and add to all the cuteness. 4.5 out of 5.

Taishin Nakano moves to Tokyo from Fukuoka to attend the same college as Takara Shiga after Takara left quite the impression on Taishin when he was younger.

I like stories where the characters are forthright. It minimizes silly misunderstandings and focuses on the feelings of the main couple. These two are pretty seamless as they get together; there isn’t a huge conflict or a bunch of complications to get them into a relationship. The smutty parts are staved for the end and are kept pretty short; almost like an epilogue. Since it’s short overall, I wish we had more time with them, especially at school or the hiking club they’re both a part of. But, I did like it. 3.5 out of 5.

Officer Shin Nakamoto is assigned to a small town where he runs into an old mentor, Seiji Tajima; who runs a small store. They haven’t seen each other in ten years but Shin’s feelings haven’t changed.

These two goofballs are so sweet. It’s a cute story of a long standing crush and their relationship is wholesome and fucking adorable. I like how the art style tries to make Seiji look older but honestly, they still both seem young. Of course they’re adults since there are plenty of smutty scenes. There is an age gap and while late 30’s is hardly old, it’s nice to have characters outside of the late 20’s zone most of these stories fall into. Overall, this is a low angst romance with a good story and a fun couple. 4 out of 5.

Mei works had his family’s business, a taiyaki shop that gets really busy around an event called the Star Festival and has a long standing crush on a repeat customer named Naru. While Mai would love to confess his feelings, Naru may be more connected to Mei than he ever thought.

There’s a lot of intrigue going on here so if you’re looking for some quick smut, this isn’t it. Naru has a bunch of secrets and can’t seem to leave Mei alone; doing that strange thing of ‘I know I’m bad for this person and should leave them alone but I’m going to bring them close to me’ and not actually doing what could possibly be best for Mei. I was just left with this confusion thinking ‘where exactly is this going and do I care enough to keep reading and find out?’ But, we shall see. The first volume isn’t always the strongest start but there’s always the feeling of wanting the resolution. 3 out of 5.
