After the Battle of Sekigara, Tezezo Shinmen and Matahachi Hon’iden manage to survive. They get rescued but take vastly different paths. Matahachi wants to head back to his home village but Tezuko decides to become a vagabond as part of a goal to become a more skilled swordsman.

Be aware, this is very violent, has some nudity, and an odd number of fart jokes. The fight choreography is really good and the story is interesting but I’m not quite getting the appeal just yet. This is a legendary series for sure but “I wanna be the best at X” isn’t the most intriguing hook for me anymore. I’ll have to see where it goes from here because if it’s just hopping from sword school to sword school as Tezuko has the experience beaten into him, I don’t know if I’ll continue it. I think it’s because I don’t feel very invested in Tezuko as of right now because he’s a bit flat to me. I’m sure I’ll learn more about him. 3.7 out of 5.

Konosuke finds out the extent of Lord Haretake’s plans to unseal the sessho-seki stones. Now he’s out to get the next stone first and rescue Tsuki.

The gambling turn was… Certainly a choice that was made. It takes up a lot of time after getting me invested in Lord Haraetake since we went through the long back story and the major threat in this story. Yes, I know such little jaunts introduce new characters and explore the personalities of the existing ones but it still felt odd. It wasn’t bad just odd. I do hope Takeyama is around more. He is awesome. 4 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “Witchcraft: A Graphic History” by Lindsay Squire

Told through a young girl named Lindsay visiting Biddy, a the early 19th century Irish witch, this book tells the history of witchcraft through the ages.

First off, the art style if perfect for this. It captures the beauty of nature and magic; even gives biddy a knowing glint in her expressions. It’s exposition heavy in places but the book is trying to teach the reader. It’s a perfect entry point for someone curious about what witches do; past and present. It’s cute to me as a practitioner with 30 years under my belt but for someone new, this is an enjoyable introduction. 3.7 out of 5.

After the loss at Sagami River, Yorishige faces the consequences of supporting the Hojo rebellion. But Tokiyuki refuses to allow it, offering Ashitaka a challenge: If he can kill Tokiyuki, he wins. But if Tokiyuki escapes, Ashitaka loses everything.

I want Tokiyuki to win using all these abilities and lessons we spend 12 volumes watching him learn; to finally see everything come into play and feel satisfying. But, I felt kinda bored reading this one. At least the scene with the challenge was effectively done. Other than some of the creepier enemies I’ve seen in this series, it was nice for a one-on-one with “normal” combatants. 3 out of 5.

Konosuke and Aki are still on the journey to save his wife, Tsuki from the Tsuchimikado Clan. They meet Takayama, who used to work for the Tsuchimikado and shares the grim story of the reason behind Tsuki’s kidnapping.

This volume is mostly flashback but it’s a good story. It never quite went were I expected so I was hooked the whole time. I do wonder how this will factor in with Tsuki and why she was taken. But, I’m sure the next volume will connect the two. I’m dying to know how her powers and Lord Haretake’s powers will work together since the Lord is really damn powerful. 4 out of 5.

Tokiyuki is back home now in Kamakura with his retainers as the battle still is not over. They seek out master swordsmith, Masamune. Emperor Go-Daigo sends Takauji to kill Tokiuki.

Ya’ll I thought we were done. I really thought this was gonna end with the last volume because Tokiyuki and his army took back the city but yeah, I should have known this would keep going since Takuji is still out there. Other than that, the weapon upgrades in this were interesting and Shina is a great addition to the cast. I really want to see more of her. Her back story is compelling and utilizing her regularly would make for some unique battles. 3 out of 5.

It’s all hands on deck for the final battle for control of Kamakura an when a formidable master of horses, Imagawa joins the fray, it may not be enough for Tokiyuki to evade and survive to face down the man who killed his family and friends.

As a heads up, the while thing with Imagawa and his horses is sad and super gross. I physically recoiled from what he was doing to that poor animal so, trigger warning for that I guess? It was so damn out there that when Tokiyuki finally goes up against anyone else, I was still fixated on the horse. The art style does really well with gore/body horror like this. 3 out of 5.

With Tsuki gone and his memory tampered with, Konosuke struggles to get through the day as he knows he has lost something important. Meanwhile, a traveling medium named Aki has the ability to see a person’s fated death and through a chance encounter she learns her fate is entwined with Konosuke’s.

Now the real story is coming into play with a strange request for Tsuki and her captors going after Konosuke, who of course is going to try and get her back. Aki is a hoot as well as a capable addition to Konosuke’s quest. I did wonder where this was going to go after how the first volume ended and I see a lot of potential in this adventure. 4 out of 5.

Tokiyuki and his allies face the Kanto Hisashiban, each enemy presenting a unique and challenging ability.

Yeah, the horse guy sucks. Poor horses…

I think what keeps this series from entertaining for me as much as it could is the main character. I don’t need my main characters to always be like Mizu from Blue Eyed Samurai; extremely flawed and powerful but the original fire for Tokiyuki to get his title back in the beginning of the series is down to sparking embers. It’s all barely holding my interest. There are bits that hold my interest and keep me turning the pages at the spectacle of it all but deep down, I don’t feel as invested. 3 out of 5

Ryundo Konosuke is destitute, homeless, and cursed to repel any metal he is near so he can’t wield a sword. As his mother wished for him to become a warrior, his dreams seem impossible and he decides to take his own life. However, he is saved by a mysterious woman who offers to marry him.

As the volume unfolds, I managed to get attached to Konosuke and wanted him to be happy. It’s a cute story so far; his new wife is genuine and they get alone well. The art is expressive and the fantasy elements leave just enough unsolved to make you keep reading and find out more. It’s intriguing. 3.5 out of 5.
