3-year-old calico, Mobu, is tired of being a pampered cat and wants a job to earn her own food. Despite being an introvert, she decides to work at a cat cafe.

If you like chill comics where cute animals do cute things, this is the comic for you. There are a few little side stories with other animals, but the main stars are Mobu and the other cats at the cafe. Unlike, say, A Man and His Cat, the human characters are not as involved in the plot. It’s a simple little romp with adorable characters. Perfect if you need a breath of fresh air. 4 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “Rooster Fighter” Vol. 10 by Shu Sakuratani

Morio and Chicken Little head to the ocean while Keisuke and his group make a journey into underground caves on a quest to enter the Inner Yolk.

This is a lot of lore about the eggs and getting ready to train with whichever element the members of the group match with. I love that Elizabeth has her own side quest that’s relevant and shows off her skills. While this may feel a bit like filler, I’m hoping all this lore and training will have a good payoff. Chicken Little and Morio may be a complete side story, but their relationship is really sweet, and I enjoy it when they’re featured. 4 out of 5.

Eguchi and Ikezawa get ready for the school festival.

Yeah, it’s not often that I drop a book. I DNF’d this after they needed to change their underwear at the school festival. Sorry, I have to draw my line in the sand. I am no prude. I read and write some degenerate smut, but it’s degenerate smut with adults. No rating. I’m just done with this series.

High school student Ikezawa makes a salacious comment to his classmate, Eguchi, expecting to offend her. Instead, she makes one right back, resulting in a flirtatious rivalry he was not prepared for.

As much as I can respect the “You’re being weird, then I’ll get weirder” behavior, this comes off as… Inappropriate. I ended up skimming this because it made me uncomfortable. I can see a young high school me thinking this was hilarious, but at 45, I don’t even wanna know more about these children, root for them, or want to continue reading kids making all these sexual jokes. 2 out of 5 because it’s just not for me.

Elizabeth, Keisuke, and Keiji are still searching for the Righteous Master to save Keizan while being pursued by a demon who wants to capture them.

This volume has some great lore as we finally get to meet the Righteous Master, and the demon hunting them gives us some fun action scenes. This is also a far more serious installment with only tiny bits of humor. The focus is on the brothers and more information about Righteous Eggs. I can feel the impending training arc coming up, but that’s still fun to see. You almost forget this is the demon fighting chickens series since it’s a good story. 3.7 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “The Way of the Househusband” Vol. 15, by Kousuke Oono

In this volume, our favorite house husband:

  • Help sell some crepes
  • Visits an old friend’s grave
  • Helps procure gifts for Mother’s Day
  • Helps Yuriko find a good deal
  • Goes clam-digging
  • Miku has a bad day
  • Searches for some specific pickles

I can empathize with the pickle adventure. When you find a product that you like, there’s just no substitute. It is nice to see more characters roped into this madness. Everyone just rolls with it, I love it. It’s actually uplifting to read some of these since fewer people are being judgmental of Tatsu. This is pretty rapid-fire, with some small plotlines running through it, but it’s still so much fun.

Lenni Reviews: “Komi Can’t Communicate” Vol. 35, by Tomohito Oda

As Komi’s friend group has increased (only three left till she hits one hundred) she branches out more, going to karaoke where she’s brave enough to pick the first song, and plays silly couple games at a festival. Perspective shifts to Shousuke as his classmates try to get him to laugh and then to Manbagi, as she makes progress in her relationship with Wakai.

This blows through stories, but it’s done well. The pacing allows each one to feel natural, they’re all interesting, and get resolved in the same positive tone this series has maintained throughout. Komi has come such a long way, and it’s so damn satisfying to see her come out of her shell so successfully. 4 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “I Wanna Do Bad Things with You” Vol. 1, by Yutaka

Mamori has always felt ignored and weak and her classmates judge her for being so tall. Her classmate, Fuji, is jealous of his perfect older brother. When they meet, they not only find a kindred spirit but decide to stir up some trouble to get back at those who ignore and underestimate them.

This is a cute start to the series with our two misfits deciding to be misfits together. Mamori is relatable and adorable and Fuji has some depths to be explored in the future. His older brother seems sus (a LOT sus, actually) but we’ll see what’s done with his character. I do hope Fuji doesn’t get too manipulative with Mamori because she’s a total pushover. 3.5 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “The Way of the Househusband” Vol. 12, by Kousuke Oono

In this volume, Tatsu participates in a baseball game against some window breaking kids, helps his friend Masa with his food tasting videos, visits a new food cart with some very odd food combinations, takes a traffic safety class, and deals with some Halloween trick or treaters.

The stories are rapid fire in this and feel shorter than in previous volumes but they’re still funny and clever so, I’ll take it. Better to keep it pithy and entertaining than try to pad things out and get boring. I still would like more backstory on Tatsu, though. 4 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “Komi Can’t Communicate” Vol. 30, by Tomohito Oda

While the “competition” for Tadano’s affections ends in Komi’s favor, she still tries to make amends with Kawai in order to convert her into another one of her friends.

As I’d said, I am a little bummed that Kawai didn’t end up a non-friend but not a rival but there is an aspect of this series that tends to take something earnest and make it weird.  It was funny that Tadano was just unaware of all of this going on. But after that’s done, it goes back to Komi being her adorable and earnest self and the side characters have some interesting “screen” time as well. 4 out of 5.
