Things have been going pretty well on the promotion front these days. It’s not much but I still see my writing as a way to make a decent sized side income. What is a trickle today may be a flood tomorrow so I’m not giving up. If anything, I’m working harder and being more diligent about meeting my goals and polishing my craft. One of the tools I picked up to help me out (because I’m concerned about copycats) is Grammarly’s online plagiarism and grammar tool because I’m awesome enough to do all this other stuff, but can’t remember how to properly use a comma to save my life.
This week I have finished one more chapter of First Brood 3 and picked at a few submission calls that I have floating around. My main focus has been to get my finances in order and get debt free. I’m a pretty responsible person so my credit debt is nil but I still have the car loan and the mortgage. Once my car loan is paid off, I can throw that money on the mortgage. 🙂 And of course the sales of my books go towards that, as well. (hint hint, nudge nudge)
Next week is Winter Break and being a good mama, I’ve taken my vacation with my daughter. I’ve got plans to get crafty so be prepared to laugh at my attempts to make homemade lip balm and teach my 6 year old to knit.
amazon, authors, Barnes and Noble, book, book sales, books, ebook, ebooks, facebook, free, free books, free ebooks, free promotion, KDP Select, kindle, Kindle Direct Publishing, librivox, nook, Nook Press, promotion, sale, sales, sales channels
I recently made a post on facebook about how I have over 3000 books between my Kindle and my Nook and how I’ve paid for about 4 of them. Less if you count my Swagbucks giftcards that I’ve used on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Between Librivox, One Hundred Free Books, Hundred Zeros, EBook Spice, and Book Bub, I can get 20 or so books in one day and not lay out a dime for any of them. I have discovered so many cool authors and series I’ve gotten into because of these promotions and I would LOVE to do the same for my books.
However (isn’t there always a ‘however?’) the only easy way to get your book free on Amazon is the KDP select program, which offers the book free to Prime members ONLY and ONLY if you stop selling the book anywhere but Amazon. A decent enough promotion I suppose but what about people who can’t afford to or won’t sign up for Amazon Prime? The books I’m getting from the above sites are regular, plain ole free to download and KEEP. When I looked into making that happen for my books, the only way to go about that seems to be:
- Publish on Smashwords (or another site) for free
- Notify Amazon and B&N of a lower price so they’re forced to price match
- Wait till they do so
- Wait till they change it back when you’re done with the promotion which could take forever
Not to sound lazy but that is way to freaking convoluted to me. I think both Amazon and B&N should make it so you can price your book at any level so you can do a promotion like “in celebration of book 2, here’s book 1 free for a week” or something like that. It gives authors a chance at major exposure because it’s on multiple platforms for free; and people LOVE free.
I know people have fabulous success with KDP Select but there has to be an easier way than to cut off other sales channels or try and game the system. I can understand the sites wanting to make their money but I don’t see Amazon exactly hurting for profits and ya know what? I’d like to make some money, too. As giant book selling sites, they could easily say “There’s a 2 week limit if you set your price at $0.00.” I couldn’t blame them. But at least give us a shot. I would like to do a decent promotion without risking having my account suspended at either site for ‘cheating.’
So, give it a shot, Amazon and B&N! It certainly wouldn’t cost you money since people are setting their prices at free anyway.
In 2011, I sold about 2-3 books a month. This year, I’m hoping to double that. ^_^
I will also be starting the 100 book challenge and also adding the Pagan Blog Project. That’s at least two posts a week for my blogs (remember I am also at livejournal) in addition to the fun updates about how my writing is going. XD
Another goal I have for this year is to clean out as much clutter as I can. The garbage man is gonna hate meee… I plan to donate and sell very large amounts of extra clothes and collectables that are taking up space in this house. I’ve already taken care of our living room tossing a 40 year old dining set that was falling apart but my Mother refused to throw out. We’re hanging up pictures that previously were crammed into shelves and tossing out anything we haven’t used in 6 months.
My workout schedule is going well but I have to admit; if I don’t have work, I do NOT get up at 6am to be in the gym. I figure if I’m off, I can work out in the afternoon when my kid is at school. As long as I DO it, the time isn’t important.
My goal of 4 pages a day has not changed. Even with the new comic I’m working on, I’ll still make sure to get one short story out every month and Greenhouse will be done by the end of the year. I would like to have a store full of stories in all genres! 😀
I would also like to take one vacation with my whole family. I usually run away and leave them behind. While necessary for my sanity, some of my best memories are traveling somewhere cool with my family. It was harder when I was a kid because my Granny was in a wheelchair but we are blessedly all able bodied so other than time, there’s no reason not to go. 🙂
I think that’s all the important stuff. Anything else you all think I should add?
I randomly logged into Create Space to work on getting Dreamhunter on Kindle (pauses for cheers of joy) and I see that I have a message.
I sold a book. To somebody I don’t know.
I’m sure this has happened before since I’ve sold a grand total of 20 or so copies of DH and I know about 8-10 of them personally (and minus the 4 copies I’ve purchased myself), but I’m still nervous that someone I don’t know has my baby in their hands. I really hope they like it. *chews fingernails*
My ankle is healing nicely and I’m spending the time reading and writing. Mostly, I’ve been working on Greenhouse but of course there are other stories floating around. I’m brainstorming the third book in the First Brood series already but that doesn’t have a title yet.
I’m a little wonky today since last night was hubbsters 30th birthday dinner. I nursed one cherry blossom martini the whole night while he got shitfaced. I also went home early so I could steal Monkeygirl cuddles and he went to a bar and got so drunk (I hear) that people were able to draw on him without his knowledge. I demand pictures, people!! XD
Since it is a rainy and crappy day, I’m sure it’ll be quiet so I can write.
Now that I’ve said that, I’m sure it won’t happen. :p
