Kotsume the otter is considering a job with Poseidon while Dynonisis and Hermes accompany Colette on her journey.

Mild spoilers, but I am VERY unsure about the addition of a “precocious young child” character. She’s cute, but I can see her getting annoying long-term. Since we’re getting into the realizing feelings phase, we don’t have any confessions. Especially since Colette is still so devoted to her work. I wonder if she’ll be forced to choose between that and Hades. And that damn silly little otter made me cry; that adorable little fucker. 3.5 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “Sakura, Saku” Vol. 9, by Io Sakisaka

After rejecting Haruki’s confession, Saku is convinced she did the right thing, freeing him to love Hazuki. But Kotono’s scolding has her doubting her decision in this final volume.

While I’m glad Saku finally stepped up and was honest about what she wanted, I’m actually disappointed Haruki (spoilers) was indeed the guardian angel the whole time because that’s pretty predictable. It’s sweet, but part of me wanted it to be a completely random person who had nothing to do with any of them, but they got together anyway. This was still nice, though. Even if you can totally see it coming. As the final volume, all my tender-hearted readers out there get our happy ending. 3 out of 5.

After the attack in the vampire bar, Amanatsu has been having nightmares, and Hina wants to cheer him up by taking him out for animal therapy. They run into Rinya, the voice actor for Hina’s favorite character, who is also long-lived and doesn’t understand why Hina is so enthusiastic after so much time.

This volume balances the silly and serious better and advances the relationship between our two main romantic leads. There are some new characters, and it was interesting for a second to see Hina wanting to protect Amanatsu, some actual lasting effects of the risks he’s taken, but still, it’s resolved too quickly for me. It seems like there should be more attention on that than the romantic drama. 3.7 out of 5.

As Colette’s journey to her hometown continues, she encounters Hercules and spends time with her siblings. We learn more about all of them and their journey as healers.

Kotume is an adorable addition, and screw Posidon for being cruel to that precious little bean.

How can you be mean to that little face!!??

Other than that, this volume is mostly about Colette and Hades getting closer. There was the chance of a typical ‘beach episode,’ but she is such a hard worker that we skip that trope, and she spends the time learning unique skills from the healers near the sea. She adds these to her skill set before heading back to the underworld. This is the volume with the most negativity as some apprentices are nasty to Marie (Colette’s older sister) and the harsh treatment of Kotsume (an otter). It was a downer in the series for sure. 4 out of 5.

Kyuta is still hiding his vampire status from his friends and when he and Hoshino luck into tickets for a hot spring, he sees it as a chance to come out.

Again, the super serious and super silly in this volume is jarring. Spoilers for this volume, but Hina and Amanatsu get hit by a fucking truck. But like the stalker, it was just kinda handwaved away, and we’re off to a cosplay photoshoot. Yes, it’s adorable and fun, watching Hina and Amanatsu do their little crush thing is cute, but excuse me? They were hit by a TRUCK. How can I take threats seriously in this series if that’s just not a bother? Hina I get is a vampire, but the volume has a time jump to when Amanatsu is just all better now! There could have been some interesting things to explore while he healed up with all these other supernatural people around him, but nope. It’s odd. 3 out of 5.

When Apollo decides to go on vacation, Colette volunteers to fill in as healer to the gods in his absence.

In this volume, we also get Charon’s backstory, which is so sad. For all its whimsy, this series gets dark sometimes. I have to admit, I’m totally about the hardworking, sweet characters that are super genuine and are actually rewarded for their efforts. I’m not even into the possible romance. I can watch Colette just do her thing: healing people and expanding her apothecary skills. It’s also a way to learn about the world they live in and the unique take on the Greek Gods, even if some of them just kinda drop in and vanish within a few pages. I feel like if we’re going to include them, just go for it and give them some real “screen” time. 4 out of 5.

Haruki has confessed his feelings to Saku but she thinks Hazuki would be a better match for him because she’s certain he still has feelings for Hazuki and not herself. This gives Iryu a chance to make his move.

 

For some reason, Saku is really ticking me off. She’s not being honest with herself and her own feelings, making decisions about the feelings of others FOR them but also taking advantage (in a way) of Iryu’s attempts to cheer her up. Girl, just don’t deal with either of them if you’re this unsure. Maybe it’s my own bias seeping in, but don’t fucking decide other people’s feelings for them. Saku is inadvertently becoming a toxic “nice girl,” and I really hope she gets called out.

Also, this is how to make a guy kind of an asshole but still likable. Iryu says mean shit, but Wolf Girl and Black Prince should take notes.

Wanting to pursue glass blowing, Erika is trapped between her mother’s insistence on studying it in Kyoto and Kyoya’s ultimatum to stay in Tokyo or break up with him.

Yeah, I’d expect Kyoya to be a dick about this. There are plenty of characters who can balance cool, aloof jerk with a soft spot but Kyoya comes off as overly cruel then has to walk it back so the story can keep the couple together. The best part of this was someone giving him a good smack and putting him in his place because he keeps acting like a walking red flag to a girl who clearly cares for him and doesn’t deserve his abuse. 2 out of 5.

After their kiss at the festival, Nanoha and Chidori are struggling to communicate with each other about wanting to do it again. Also, a former classmate of Nanoha’s, Mai, joins their school and literature club.

These two are so damn adorable.

Even with this potential rival showing up, I’m still thinking this relationship won’t crumble because of Mai unless she threatens to out them. If I were to guess, that’s probably what’s going to happen since keeping their secret is so important. If Mai doesn’t do it, someone/thing else might. It doesn’t seem like the type of series to get really dark, so if it did, it would be very out of character. 4 out of 5.

As graduation looms, Erika is unsure what she wants for her future. Also, Kyoya’s birthday is coming, and while Erika is excited to do something nice for him, Kyoya is indifferent to the whole thing.

Erika goes to her aunt Eiko, who makes glass art, and since she’s so excited about it, she’s considering doing it as a career. Meanwhile, this volume tries to get me to like Kyoya again as he learns to enjoy his birthday, and he encourages Erika to come to college with him, but I didn’t forget what happened in volume 12. In my mind, he hasn’t redeemed himself, and that temper is consistent throughout the whole series. It wasn’t just one bad day. Maybe college is the chance for Erika to get away from him for a while. 3 out of 5.
