Due to his problem of blending into the background, Shiraishi is nervous about participating in Sports Day on a team. Of course, Kubo ensures he’s able to participate like a normal kid and he begins to see her in a new light.

It’s nice to see Shiraishi making more friends and being seen. The tone of this is similar to Komi in that it’s slowly unfolding the main character and giving them a proper group of friends. Aside for sports, there’s studying for their exams – a classic of these YA slice of life manga – and we get some development for Kubo as well. We spend some time with her friends, explore her relationship with her sister, and her cousin, and overall; it’s just adorable and sweet. 4 out of 5.

As they make plans to spend Christmas and New Year’s together, Nomato starts to realize her feelings for Kasuga are blossoming into more than just friendship.

Much like volume one, most of this is Kasuga enjoying what Nomato cooks. It’s soothing and it’s adorable to see them interacting. But seeing Nomato really think about her feelings and research what it all could mean was great representation. I also got one of me my wishes; more back story for Kasuga. But still no recipes for all the delicious food featured in the book. But, I like both characters and look forward to the next one. 4.7 out of 5.

Keiichi falls for the school nurse but his older brother, who is a teacher at the school, warns him not to get involved with her. Meanwhile, the girls of the class make joke cream puffs for the boys in the class and they decide to get revenge by making joke takoyaki.

There’s also a trip they all take together and a story about them working at a host club. Other than the creepy thing with the school nurse, this volume was fun to read. It’s a decent slice of life story but I didn’t feel like there was much forward momentum as far as the characters go. Things just happen then it moves on to another story. 3.9 out of 5.

Now a third year, Komi is running out of time to make 100 friends before she graduates.

A lot of this volume is spent on a school wide Nerf battle where a fellow student, Shiina, is more cynical than most of the people Komi tries to befriend. Of course this manga is as light hearted and won’t give Komi much trouble but that was an interesting way for Komi to come out of her shell more. But, I gotta be honest, way too much of this is that Nerf battle. It’s a cute premise but it went on forever. I’d rather have more moments for Komi’s development. 4 out of 5.

While Satomi and Yagyu continue to date, Satomi’s friend, Mira, also has a crush she wants to confess and is working up the courage to tell Tenma she likes him.

Most of this is Mira and Tenma, which is fine since their personalities are completely different from Satomi and Yagyu – who are pretty established at this point. They’re energetic and funny, so they’re entertaining while Satomi and Yagyu are doing their slice of life thing. Again, this is a nice series for a chilled out YA romance. 4 out of 5.

Ganta and Isaki are enjoying their club but the school insists they meet certain requirements for it to continue. They look into former member of the previous astronomy club – who has since graduated – named Yui, who helps them come up with an event to make the club legit.

Most of this is prepping for the stargazing event. Meanwhile, Isaki and Ganta are growing closer. It’s cute and I like seeing the club coming together. If you’re in the mood for some young adult slice of life, this is nice. Especially when they talk about looking at the stars. 3.9 out of 5.

We start off with a new character; Shiki Satsujo, who is struggling not to cry during graduation, followed by some White Day shenanigans. But the real feature is Tadano and Komi’s first date.

As the date is the main draw of this volume, the rest is a lot of filler. Cute filler but filler. That being said, as adorable as we all knew they would be, I wish we got more time with them. Having the father tag along (that’s not a spoiler, it’s on the cover) was an interesting choice but it works. He’s funny. Even though the date was short, overall I did chuckle a fair bit. 4 out of 5.

Tsuyoshi is burning the candle at both ends; trying to keep up in school and finish his manga before an upcoming convention. His friends offer to help but their efforts prove to be less than ideal.

This volume also includes summer vacation, ending up with make up classes, and going to the beach. It was so much more entertaining than previous volumes; a real slice of life vibe with some good humor. All the characters are more likable and the creepiness of the last book is mostly absent. I hope this series keeps improving. 3.5 out of 5.

Natsuki volunteers for the Beautification Committee in order to get closer to a girl he likes while Keiichi gets a confession from a girl after recently being dumped but since he’s got some unique proclivities, is uncertain about accepting any confessions from girls who won’t understand.

What makes this manga entertaining are the personalities of the four main characters. The little side stories from the girl’s perspectives are fun as well. Other than that, even for a slice of life this is a lot of fluff. It’s ok but a couple of these boys get off-putting and creepy while the others are too pure for this world. It’s an okay series so far but there isn’t much for me to latch on to. 2.7 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “The Way of the Househusband” Vol. 9, by Kousuke Oono

In this volume, Tatsu:

  • Takes up needle felting
  • Finds creative ways to cool off in a heat wave
  • Helps a mom get her kid to eat her veggies
  • Does some weeding in a neighbors garden
  • Helps out a local small business
  • Visits a maid cafe

It’s been awhile since we’ve went along with Tatsu carrying out housework and daily activities in his own unique way. This series continues to be hilarious entertainment. I’m not sure if I want it to continue with these little vignettes or settle on one overarching plot. I can see the benefits of both unless the goal is to keep this from getting to heavy and staying a source of fun enjoyment. I do want to see more of Tatsu’s backstory, thought. 5 out of 5.
