Lenni Reviews: “Dra-Q” Vol. 1, by Chiyo

*This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review and is suggested for mature readers due to gore.

Amelie Kurosaki is a high school girl hiding the fact that she is a vampire who must follow strict rules in order to continue living among humans. When attacks on humans seem vampiric, it puts Amelie’s secret at risk.

This volume doesn’t waste any time getting started. Main character, love interest, family drama, and rival love interest all plunked down in under 200 pages. It’s gory and has some dark humor, but the pace doesn’t let you sit with what’s happening for very long. You know the rules Amelie is given are presented to be inevitably broken, but I didn’t think all of them would be broken in the first volume. The plot is fun, the blood and gore are top-notch, but I almost felt dizzy by the end of it. 3 out of 5.

After using the Damned Sargent to acquire such a powerful spirit they all barely survive and need to rest up, giving Eiko some time to think about how dangerous all of this ghost hunting really is.

Eiko didn’t waffle very long as she decides with Yayoi to buy a cheap house to store spirits and the story behind this old house is fucked up. If you do not do well with body horror, you will NOT like this volume. It’s less funny and much more horrific than anything that’s come before it. Aside for the murder, there’s also incest so, trigger warning for all of that. I guess the most unbelievable part of this volume for me is a young person just having the money to buy a haunted house on a whim. *cries in post-capitalism America* 4 out of 5.

Keitaro is pushing himself too hard after the god squatting on Ai has unbalanced Yayoi’s collection of captured spirit dolls. As they have vowed to defeat this god, Yayoi and Keitaro need to capture a new crop of sprits to be an army to face him.

I was worried that this new mission would mean a bunch of filler but I like the chance to see different types of spirits and the unique ways of acquiring them. The horror is on point with the creature design and the stakes in the story as we get another antagonist introduced. Eiko is starting to worry me though. I wonder how her story will play out. 4 out of 5.

It’s been a long time since Makoto summoned a demon to indulge in his fetish for eating demon guts. Now, Makoto is a demon himself residing in hell trying to discover the true name of the demon he granted his wish and destroy him.

J, the demon, always seems a step ahead of Makoto’s plans but allows whatever schemes he concocts to play out so we learn more about J’s past. I did not expect this to end the way it did but it’s really interesting. There isn’t much smut, it’s more about Makoto trying to overcome J. It was intriguing to see Makoto go from this mousy weak little freak to a powerful demon on par with J, the most powerful of his kind. This is not one of those fluffy stories were the love of a human touches the demon’s heart and they ride off into Hell’s happily ever after. This is dark and conniving. It’s not super graphic but it is not for romantics. 4 out of 5.

Maruo knows he needs to get stronger in order to help Urara; even with the support of the Todoroki Alliance. Thanks to how powerful Enma is now, they know it will be impossible for Urara to regain her position with out more help.

This volume was interesting. I liked that Maruo found a way to train and increase his strength and that their group is growing. However, this felt a little thin. The training was cool and I enjoy the characters but this volume lacked the energy and fun as the previous ones. 3 out of 5.

Chloe’s exploits have made her famous and the press is crawling around her apartment. To protect her and she secret of ghost hunters, Nyarla puts her in a mansion safe from the human world until the heat dies down. But this place isn’t as safe for Chloe as Nyarla assumed and there are repercussions for Chloe’s fame.

The big news for this volume is Kai (the sythe); his abilities and his true nature. What’s going on is told to us like it’s super important and changes everything but I feel like it was very rushed. It had no time to breathe and let me take it all in to feel the gravity of what’s happening. It’s cool but very surface level. 3 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “Mao” Vol. 9, by Rumiko Takahashi

One of the exorcists who used to train with Mao, Natsuno, has secrets from her long past while Yurako remembers how her family used to exploit her abilities in order to make money. Meanwhile, there is a teenager cursing her classmates and Mao and Nanoka investigate.

Now that we know more about Yurako, I’m so excited to get my hands on the next volume. Yurako’s story is really interesting and I love Takahashi’s storytelling. It’s very fluid and hits plot points at a good pace in this book. There’s also some more great creature design so if you are in the market for some cool supernatural intrigue, this series is shaping up amazingly. 5 out of 5.

Chloe is making big bucks as a spirit hunter and ascending the ranks so she takes a more challenging job in direct competition with more experienced hunters and terrifying foes.

This volume has a ton of action and sets up a cool villain with some great potential to be a real threat. Chloe is still a great character with an engaging personality. Even though this is packed with a ton of information about new abilities, introducing the other hunters, and seeing them in battle, I like where this is going. 4 out of 5.

January Kal-Elle Fandom Box: Supernatural

  • My “People Skills” are “Rusty” bracelet
  • Wing adjustable ring
  • Supernatural Decal
  • Supernatural Magnet
  • Supernatural tote bag
  • 4×6 art print
  • Revolver earrings
  • Kansas license plate necklace

While I am not super into Supernatural (yeah, that could have bene phrased better but, fuck it) I am familiar enough with the show to enjoy this offering. The bracelet went right on my wrist as soon as possible. And those earrings may have to be in my regular rotation.

In addition, since I reviewed this box, Melanie was kind enough to send me a little surprise!

Which was absolutely awesome. With all these decals, I may need a bigger car… XD I’m gonna end up being one of those obnoxious cars on the road that is just COVERED in nerdy decals.

Overall a super box, especially the bracelets; which I’ve been into lately for no specific reason. It’s not heavy and doesn’t interfere with my watch or activity tracker. Great selection based around this fandom. 🙂

Lenni Reviews: “The Devouring God” by James Kendley

**This book was sent to me in exchange for an honest review.**

**This review is cross-posted at Otakus and Geeks.**

Ghost hunters Takuda, Mori, and Suzuki are sent to investigate some mysterious and disturbing calls made to a local mental health facility. As the case goes on, they notice the clues come to them way too easy. Bodies start piling up all leading to a mysterious and evil artifact.

This book does a great job setting an atmosphere of tension and mystery. The writing is competent enough to give you a real sense of Japan (in 1993). It was intriguing to see the characters change the longer they do this treacherous job; as if corrupted by the very evil they are hunting. Our three main characters work off of each other well in a delicate balance of annoyance and loyalty. Endo – the villain – talks like The Architect from The Matrix; pontificating in a way that even makes other characters snap at him to get to the point. I gotta say, Endo is MUCH less annoying and makes WAY more sense than The Architect so it wasn’t completely painful to read his little speeches.

On the whole, this book is written well enough that I didn’t feel I was missing information from the first book in this series. The ending is left quite obviously open for a new story so while the immediate problem was solved; you’re left curiously unsatisfied. The over-arching evil is still out there. If I come across the next one, I’m intrigued enough to want to pick it up as this one was an enjoyable, supernatural horror. 4.5 out of 5.
