After preventing a town from being flooded, Keiji faces a more frustrating conflict; a group date with pigeons. Keiji and his friends are also being followed by a strange woman and Keiji’s brother, Keisuke, is introduced as he begs Keiji for his help rescuing their father from a powerful new foe.

I honestly didn’t expect this series to get this interesting since the previous volumes were so zany. But with more lore and the increased threat, this volume is very entertaining. There’s nothing wrong with zany, I enjoyed it, but it’s nice to see this series get serious. Zany can only carry you so far. 4 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible” Vol. 2, by Nene Yukimori

This volume puts Kubo and Shirashi in some classic manga situations like Valentine’s Day and White Day, exchanging numbers for the first time, and studying together. We get to see Kubo being sly but also sweet. It would be so easy to just have her tease Shirashi all the time but I’m glad this doesn’t go down that road. This stays good natured and light hearted. They’re slowly and naturally becoming closer and it’s sweet! I’m not particularly a fan of the drawings of Kubo that are more fanservicy than necessary since she’s young but I skip passed them to get back to the story. 4 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “The Way of the Househusband” Vol. 4 by Kōsuke Ôno

In this volume, Tatsu:

  • Goes to buy a fish and a cat steals it
  • Meets a neighbor for a BBQ
  • Helps out a friend with his food truck
  • Takes a trip to the dollar store
  • Reads to children at a storytime
  • Plays volleyball at the beach
  • Helps a kid with his summer school work
  • Hangs out with other housewives

And we get a couple side stories about his wife, Miku, and a cute cat story.

I know I keep saying this but the fact everything is played so straight and with such intensity with these otherwise mundane tasks is just gold. This series never fails to put a smile on my face; especially after reading a Junji Ito collection. Tatsu is just so passionate and well-meaning, I have no problem just watching him shop in a dollar store. 5 out of 5.

Kakushi Gotou has a secret he’s keeping from his daughter, Hime. He doesn’t work in a suit in an office; he draws hentai manga.

He doesn’t want his daughter to end up getting teased because of his career so he puts up a front and shenanigans ensue. Gotou is just a decent guy trying to do the right thing by his daughter – who is too sweet for words. The framing device seems to be an older Hime returning to their old home and discovering her father’s work so I wonder how the series will play out from here. But if you like manga like Komi or Way of the House Husband, I think you’ll find this cute as well. 4.5 out of 5.

In this volume, The Immortal Dragon treats a roach as a hitman, plays Santa for some kids, pampers his wife with a fancy dinner, helps out as a waiter, comes upon a mafia widow at a grocery store, helps his wife get a photo with her favorite cartoon character, and even his old boss drops by to try and convince him to come back into the fold.

The fact all this is played completely straight is what makes this comedy work. He absolutely treats that roach as an enemy to be hunted down. It’s amazing. It’s just so pure and fun, I love reading these and can’t wait for each new volume. I even enjoyed the little side stories at the end; one set in high school and another involving an adorable cat. I do wonder however how long this can really go? I don’t see this series taking a sudden dark turn and it won’t take long to run out of these scenarios. But, I’m enjoying it for now! 5 out of 5.

Our favorite house husband, Tatsu, wants to get fit! After driving his wife crazy in the house with a hula-hoop, she suggests a fitness class. He also gets really into growing his own herbs and frequents a tag sale.

This manga is just good fun. I get that people may not like this because it’s so silly but the silliness is why I keep coming back and why I love it. Tatsu’s mobster looks are almost like “resting bitch face” making all of his unintentional shinanigans hilarious to me. All I need is more if Tatsu’s backstory and this will all be perfect! 4.5 out of 5.

This movie is about a seemingly normal housewife and mother who is… Enthusiastic about defending her home and family. Hijinks abound…

I was cracking up at this movie. I was left with the immediate feeling of wanting to rename this movie “First World Problems: The Revenge” and holy shit, is it ever funny. It’s twisted, it’s over the top, it’s violent, and I loved every minute of it. I don’t even wanna go into detail because if you like dark comedy, you will get a kick out of this movie.

Lenni Reviews: “Shapeshifters Anonymous” by J.A. Konrath

Robert Weston has been blacking out, waking up in odd places, and finding odd items in his poop (I hadda read it, you get to read it in the review). Turns out he’s a shifter. Luckily there’s a support group for people dealing with this particular condition and while the gathering may be private, Robert can’t shake the feeling he’s being followed. Someone is after the shifters and now they’re all in danger.

First off, the members of this support group are too fucking chill with the fact some of them – Robert included – have killed and eaten people. I know this story isn’t taking itself seriously, but I expect more than a wince or gasp from a character  when they discover they ate their neighbor. And no cops involved? Not even a knock on the apartment door about a missing person? Ok then…

Eh, this book is fairly harmless. I smirked a bit at some of the jokes but its forgettable over all; like candy. 2.5 out of 5.

I seem to have a problem…

My partner and I were brainstorming ideas for a comic we could update frequently. Something lighthearted and funny; which would draw readers in and bring attention to our other works in various genres. As we brainstormed I noticed a problem:

It is very difficult for me to come up with lighthearted, funny ideas that don’t take a horrific turn at some point in the story. o_O This really makes me wonder what the hell is wrong in my brain that makes happiness hard to write? I certainly enjoy funny online comics and laugh at comedic parts in books, yet when I try to sit and plot out a funny script where nothing horrid will happen and it only involves real people; no magic, no creatures – I draw a complete blank. 0.0

Any suggestions on how to leap this hurdle?
