Lenni Reviews: “Neverwhere” by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Chris Riddell

I’ll be completely honest here, I’ve already read Neverwhere. I’ve seen the TV miniseriesΒ and I’ve read the graphic novel. If Gaiman wrote a phone book, I’d read it. But when offered the chance to review an illustrated edition of the book? Sign. Me. UP!

The story isn’t much changed (according to the forward, Gaiman made a few changes but I didn’t see anything major) so I’m gonna spent my time talking about the art. If you’ve ever seen an explorers notebook with sketches of the new plants, animals, and peoples he or she is encountering, that is how this book is illustrated. Some of the sketches are full page, some are half, and some weave through the margins. Since this story is about a man who stumbles into a new world, I think that format is perfect if you want an illustrated edition of the story.

If you are or know a fan of Neil Gaiman (whether they’ve read this book or not), you will love this edition. It would make a great gift because I know I loved recieving it.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy “All I Really Want As A Gift Is A Nap” Day to my fellow mom’s! πŸ˜€ My kid (and by proxy her father) got me these lovely gifts. The card has a recorded (slightly garbled) message from the kiddo saying how she’ll love me forever no matter where I am; which is so sweet that I think it rotted out a tooth. πŸ™‚

Today will be a (hopefully) fun filled day with my 2.5 foot reason for living on this earth. We’ll have lunch, walk around, and if she’s well behaved; she’ll get ice cream.

I can do without the high temperature but I sure am glad the weather is nice.

Screw Black Friday

I gotta give it to people who actually camp outside of stores in order to grab the latest thingamabob that TV tells them they want this year. But I for one avoid the whole damn thing. I can’t stand it.

I’ve worked in retail so the only reason I would be in a store on Black Friday is if I got time and a half to be there. The concept of "ZOMG, BUY MY CHEAP CRAP NAOW!!" in order to drive people into such a frenzy they kill one another seems barbarous and manipulative. I make it a point not to buy a damn thing I don’t need on Black Friday.

I will, however, be participating in Small Business Saturday to support my fellow Etsy members and other small business that really suffer in the wake of giant discount megamarts trying to squish them.

I’m a hippy, so sue me.

I for one am glad to be in the library today and will stay away from stores whenever I can ’till late January or so. I shop online when applicable but mostly, I give baked goods as presents. Cheap, fun, and I can tailor each gift to the person. And what I really love about them? You don’t have to keep them! They won’t gather dust on a shelf, can’t get bored with them, and if they break, you can still use ’em. XD Hell, if you break a cookie, all the calories fall out. πŸ˜‰

But if you’re out or going out to brave the hordes today, for heaven’s sakes be careful!
