Gero is with the Fire Clan when the heir to the clan is killed, and when Shizuku is blamed, he helps find the killer.

Mei is so interesting! I need to know more about him. These tiny drips of his lore are killing me in the best way. This probably won’t end up with Mei and Gero getting together, but I bet there’s so much more to Mei than we realize since he’s so chill about all this crazy master clan, powers, and battle stuff. Aside from me geeking out over Mei, the Fire Clan mystery was very interesting. Their leader is terrifying, and I wonder what the outcome of that story arc will have to do with the other clans. 4 out of 5.

Gero is on the way to rescue Kinosaki and the rest of the matchmaking party from Gun Master Miyuki.

Gero is just kinda bopping to the tune of whatever drama the other families are getting up to in this volume. It’s fine, Gero is a good character, and his goofiness contrasts well with his grim and impressive talents. The fight scenes are interesting, but it just makes me wonder how all of this ties in with the original premise other than the “only one bed” trope. Not a bad read since seeing the various masters battle is always a treat. 3 out of 5.

A recovered Gero heads to rescue Makoto from marrying Takeo, who has been obsessed with her for years. Then Gero and Mei go to an upscale matchmaking event that’s crashed by the Gun Master Clan.

Takeo is… I struggle to find the words. I somehow am very creeped out by him, yet also can’t completely take him seriously. Reiji is the real threat here, making Takeo just an annoyance whenever you see him. After that, this volume wastes no time; it’s right on to the new group of masters to introduce as a threat. We also get a quick tease of a Gero and Mei date, but honestly, it doesn’t slow anything down. I did like the little date because it gave Gero the chance to voice how Mei has really gone above and beyond to help him, getting in REAL danger many times just to get Gero married. Mei is an awesome character. 3.9 out of 5.

Erina and Mei conspire to get Gero and Chinatsu to date, then Ureshino calls to ask for Gero to help her friend, Makoto, who is also being forced to marry by her abusive father.

The majority of this is the job with Makoto and the marriage she’s being forced into. Her father is working with the Ghose Master, and his powers are unique, but I felt like it was just another woman to add to Gero’s roster of prospective brides, but he’s not making any progress in becoming more confident romantically. His confidence shows in combat and the fights are cool but I’m hoping this becomes more than collecting massive amounts of possible wives. 3 out of 5.

Teruaki is determined to get Hikaru to give up on the matchmaking and just be the head of the Poison Masters.

It’s a bit odd to show how dramatic the effects of the poison master can be, only to walk it back later. Last volume, Teruaki poisoned an entire crowd of people then drop in they were just knocked out in this volume. It gives me “Look! I can see their parachutes! They’re okay.” vibes. I was legitimately frightened at the implications last time. Then we move on to Gero’s next date, a bodyguard named Chinatsu whose client is a girl named Erina. The Wind Clan is introduced, and they are oddly wholesome. Considering the head of the Beast Clan is still fiddling around, we might be building towards a war between the clans, and that’s gonna throw a wrench in any marriage plans. I don’t like that Mei is acting all cryptic. He’s a lot of fun and I don’t wanna lose his presence. 4 out of 5.

The battle between Toshiro and Gero comes to an end, giving Gero the chance to once again pursue his romantic mission.

I had to look up Mei’s character profile to get the right pronouns. Yes, he/him is correct and I’ll be using those from now on. In this volume, we learn he has a brother, Okuto. Other than that, this is more about Toshiro working on himself and now Teruaki is coming to interfere. Again, the fighting techniques and talents are kinda scary in their implications, making it a relief when Toshiro is just his silly self. I was wondering when the rest of the clan would weigh in on what Toshiro is doing. They don’t seem the type to sit back and wait after forcing him into this situation. 4 out of 5.

Hamster Master Arashiyama has been taken under Gero’s watch and he teams up with the Hitman Hunter, Piichi, to save her. But facing the leader of the Beast Master clan will be a monumental challenge.

Piichi’s back story is just violent hilarity and I have to give it to Kinosaki. They really go above and beyond for Gero. He’s lucky to have good people with him. The Beast Master’s ultimate form/abilities are impressively disgusting. He reminds me of too much splicing in Batman Beyond; just squirming parts of animals competing for space. The battle is well done and again, all the different assassins’ abilities working together is very entertaining. I had hoped Arashiyama would have done more but the fight isn’t over yet. 3.5 out of 5.

In order to protect Hamster Master Arashiyama, Gero not only has to face the Hit Man Hunter but the entire Beast Clan on their home turf including Beast Master Toshiro Dogo, the head of the clan.

This volume has a ton of action and Arashiyama is really funny. Of course, I’m a sucker for cute animals and watching little hamsters come in so handy is a fun part of the general cool factor of all these different abilities. It’s overall tense with some amusing moments but it really expands the assassination world and ups the threat. Beast Master Toshiro is also very, VERY creepy. 4 out of 5.

While acting as a body guard for Shiori, Gero faces the Sound Master Naruko. Then Gero must confront his next big challenge: attending his close friend’s wedding.

I mean… Given what we’ve gone through in this volume alone, there’s no way the wedding would be remotely normal. They also introduce the Hitman Hunter so, this volume is flying through plot points while I’d honestly hoped for more quality time with Mei and Gero. Not even for those two nutjobs to get together but because they’re so much fun to see interact. 3 out of 5.

After Hikaru does battle with a water master to save Hemekawa, an art thief, his next assignment is to be the bodyguard of a young woman with social anxiety who has been targeted by a sound master.

While this can get goofy when Hikaru tries to be romantic, this volume has a lot of fighting and action with challenging opponents for Hikaru. He’s a force to be reckoned with so I think his family should just let the man work because he’s a brilliant assassin and it’s not like he’s super old and can’t sire the required heir later on. Let the man cook, geez… But still, it’s really entertaining and creative. 4 out of 5.
