Not 21 years old, Asa has founded a private airline: “Asada Asa Trading Company.” She is both manager and pilot. In her rare downtime, she has been meeting with an American deserter from the Vietnam War.

I do love how Asa fits into these major historical events happening around the world. Kinda gives me Forrest Gump vibes, but here we have sea monsters, secret societies, daring plane fights, and American spies. Absolutely fantastic. Asa’s character scratches the same part of my brain as Colette; just a decent, hardworking person doing their best. Granted, Asa is clearly dealing with much more danger. This series is a lot of fun and has a decent amount of intrigue and humor to keep things interesting. 4.5 out of 5.

After driving away the creature, Asadora is back to a relatively normal life. Her friends are pursuing their dreams, aside from Sho, who is addicted to drugs, but now in 1968, she is still a pilot awaiting more information about the monster in the sea.

It’s nice that Asa still tries to help Yono with her acting drama when her main goal is monitoring the airwaves for any news about the kaiju. She’s become a great pilot that her colleagues are impressed with and she’s such a hard worker with a positive attitude. You have to remember, she’s lost so much over the course of this series. Even though we don’t see the monster in this volume, we get some interesting photographic evidence and the rest of the story is sweet even if it feels tangential to the core problem of what’s living in the waters. 4 out of 5.

Asadora managed to drive away the creature on the coast of Japan but now, she’s forbidden to participate in any more dangerous flying and go back to being a student. But the government still wants her to assist, believing she is Japan’s only hope.

This volume is less actions focused to give the characters some time to breathe and give us a change to see them develop more. But I have no clue where this is all going. Will there be a huge monster battle? Will the creature just leave? Will we ever find out what the creature is or where it came from? It is cool that we see Asa’s friends doing their own thing but I also wonder if they’re gonna end up involved with this monster business. 4 out of 5.

Asa and Nakaido are attacked by the strange creature while in flight and Nakaido frantically trying to decipher some old documents to find its weakness before it reaches land, Meanwhile, one of her friends gets scouted by a sleezy agent and the other gets cornered by some thugs.

This was not a volume with a big reveal of what this creature is but it’s more about As coming into her skills as a pilot. The side stories with her friends are good but Asa is the attention grabber. Following her is the best part of this series but I am still wondering where this is all going and what the outcome will be. Is this going to be the type of story with a huge showdown with the creature? Will there be a scientific solution that makes it just leave? Will Asa’s friends factor in to this or are they just there to act as sort of a commercial break in Asa’s story? I guess that remains to be seen. 4 out of 5.
