Tokiyuki is back home now in Kamakura with his retainers as the battle still is not over. They seek out master swordsmith, Masamune. Emperor Go-Daigo sends Takauji to kill Tokiuki.

Ya’ll I thought we were done. I really thought this was gonna end with the last volume because Tokiyuki and his army took back the city but yeah, I should have known this would keep going since Takuji is still out there. Other than that, the weapon upgrades in this were interesting and Shina is a great addition to the cast. I really want to see more of her. Her back story is compelling and utilizing her regularly would make for some unique battles. 3 out of 5.

Mamori has always felt ignored and weak and her classmates judge her for being so tall. Her classmate, Fuji, is jealous of his perfect older brother. When they meet, they not only find a kindred spirit but decide to stir up some trouble to get back at those who ignore and underestimate them.

This is a cute start to the series with our two misfits deciding to be misfits together. Mamori is relatable and adorable and Fuji has some depths to be explored in the future. His older brother seems sus (a LOT sus, actually) but we’ll see what’s done with his character. I do hope Fuji doesn’t get too manipulative with Mamori because she’s a total pushover. 3.5 out of 5.

Saku worries that Kotono may also have feelings for Haruki as they are still pretending to be dating to throw off her ex.

This was really sweet and I appreciate Saku and Kotono talking things out instead of letting all these doubts and questions fester but honestly, I am really worried about Kotono’s ex. He is a walking talking red flag that I could see getting violent and I don’t believe he’ll completely back off. He needs to be dealt with before I feel I can enjoy Saku and Haruki getting closer. It’s this mental axe hanging over the plot for me. 4 out of 5.

After the senior trip, the boys are beset by midterms and planning for their lives post graduation. Part of this is Sports Day, where the boys take the chance to show off to the girls. Anna is still upset after what went down over the trip but despite this, Mari gets the courage to confess her feelings to Anna.

Man, I was upset we didn’t get the conclusion to Mari’s confession in this volume. Instead of that, we switch to another couple who are cute but, holy crap what a cliffhanger! And they’re putting Anna’s brain through the fucking ringer. 3.7 out of 5.

In this volume, Tatsu participates in a baseball game against some window breaking kids, helps his friend Masa with his food tasting videos, visits a new food cart with some very odd food combinations, takes a traffic safety class, and deals with some Halloween trick or treaters.

The stories are rapid fire in this and feel shorter than in previous volumes but they’re still funny and clever so, I’ll take it. Better to keep it pithy and entertaining than try to pad things out and get boring. I still would like more backstory on Tatsu, though. 4 out of 5.

While Emika is in love with her costar, Kanato, he also has feelings for her and they just can’t seem to make their feelings known.

Yeah, this series of miscommunications is kinda silly but it’s fun and more interesting than the previous volume. They’re just two silly, fumbling kids who can’t get it together. I thought it’d be all wrapped up by the end of the volume because how long can you keep this joke up before it’s tiresome or beyond the ability to stretch my suspension of disbelief. Eventually, something is gonna have to give so they can inevitably get together. 3.8 out of 5.

Our group heads to Hashima where Shizuka notices that Akira has accomplished an interesting item on his list: “Meet the woman of my dreams.” This realization causes heavy awkwardness in the group that threatens to split them up for good.

There’s also funny asides to “Kensho in Borderland” and making a zombie movie.

The dolphin thing was kinda cute and I don’t think it’s much of a spoiler to say Akira and Shizuka are adorable together. I do wonder what the next step will be since that’s worked itself out. I would like to see more progress towards a possible vaccine and crossing things of the list rather than add even more people to this growing cast. 3.7 out of 5.

Hiroto and his cousin, Natsumi, start their summer, the tightly wound real estate agent in charge of Hiroto’s property, Yomogi, insists on doing repairs herself. Hiroto’s friend, Hideki, is nervous about his impending fatherhood and Nastumi gets a job; gaining more confidence; especially when it comes to her judgmental classmates.

Yomogi does a lot for just a real estate agent. Maybe it’s different in Japan but, I’d expect a repair service to handle repairs and not a real estate agent? I dunno. It seemed like extra stress for an already stressed out person. Other than that, I’m glad out little cast is rounding out. A bit of a spoiler but we get some insight into Hiroto’s past where he wasn’t so happy go lucky and his family and friends do their best to keep up his chill attitude. This volume of slice of life has some slow moments but, I really like it. 4 out of 5.

Buddy gets a job working for Joey Drew, the owner of an animation studio. It’s the chance of a lifetime for a poor kid from the Lower East Side. A dream that would turn into a nightmare.

Without the supernatural elements, this story feels like the classic rude awakening for an idealistic young person realizing the realities of his dream job are terrible. Buddy is really likeable and although I felt we didn’t have the chance to really get to know the other characters, they all make a decent group despite not having much impact. if you’re a big fan of this property, it may be worthwhile to check it out but aside for that, it’s alright. 2.7 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “Last Quarter” Vol. 1, by Ai Yazawa

After running away from home at 17, Mizuki has a terrible accident. The same day, little Hotaru also suffers an accident. After she recovers, she meets Mizuki again looking for her cat and Hotaru decides to make friends with Mizuki. But Hotaru is the only one who can see Mizuki.

This is a different story than I’m used to from Yazawa. Spoiler (?) alert but this is a ghost romance lost love sort of story. While I wanted a great ending for Mizuki, the guy she ran away for – Adam – was a dick and a creep because Mizuki was 16-17 when she wanted to be with him and as far as I am aware, he is a full ass adult. My version of a happy ending would be for her to put Adam behind her and find someone who doesn’t decide to randomly choke you. Hotaru and her classmates are cute though; going on their mission to help Mizuki. Their earnestness is endearing and refreshing. 3 out of 5.
