Lenni Reviews: “Brooms” by Jasmine Walls & Teo Duvall

In 1930’s Mississippi, magic is common but either banned or severely restricted for people of color. Despite this, Billie Mae and Cheng Kwan introduce young Mattie and Emma broom racing in order to participate in underground broom racing to earn money to learn magic from a real school.

Despite the abundance of characters, it’s easy to empathize with their struggles and hopes. The racing is a lot of fun and while the representation is wide – there are participants of all races, ages, and ability – it doesn’t feel forced; more like all of these “outcasts” can come together to buck the system and cut loose. I would LOVE to see this as an animated movie. The flying scenes scream for it. Absolutely check this one out! 4.5 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “MADK” Vol. 3, by Ryo Suzuri

*This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review and is rated 18+

It’s been a long time since Makoto summoned a demon to indulge in his fetish for eating demon guts. Now, Makoto is a demon himself residing in hell trying to discover the true name of the demon he granted his wish and destroy him.

J, the demon, always seems a step ahead of Makoto’s plans but allows whatever schemes he concocts to play out so we learn more about J’s past. I did not expect this to end the way it did but it’s really interesting. There isn’t much smut, it’s more about Makoto trying to overcome J. It was intriguing to see Makoto go from this mousy weak little freak to a powerful demon on par with J, the most powerful of his kind. This is not one of those fluffy stories were the love of a human touches the demon’s heart and they ride off into Hell’s happily ever after. This is dark and conniving. It’s not super graphic but it is not for romantics. 4 out of 5.

August 2023 Writing Update

I am picking at the edits for the next Go Away Girls book that I’ve decided to settle on calling “Vanished” (unless I hit on something better in the editing process). There’s a bunch of stuff I put in the outline that didn’t make it into the first rough draft that I feel will make the story much better so, I’m working on ironing out what I did get down before I start including that stuff.

“Vanished” will be the third book in the series. You can check out the first one here or here (contains adult material, be 18+ to read), or check out a different one of my lesbian fantasy stories here, here, here, or here.

Hope you’ll check them out and I’ll hopefully be updating again soon!

Lenni Reviews: “I Want to be a Wall” Vol. 1, by Honami Shirono

Yuriko and Gakurota appear to be like any other newlywed couple but behind the scenes, Yuriko is asexual who loves yaoi and Gakurota is gay; hiding his unrequited love for his childhood friend who also  happens to be the gardener for the house they live in.

Other than Gakurota’s feelings, this is pretty low angst and more slice of life. Yuriko still tries to be a good wife, and Gakurota tries to be a good husband despite them not being in love at all. You don’t see many asexual characters around and Yuriko is funny and likable. They both settle in to life together, attempting to share interests and be a “normal” couple. I wonder how this will play out in future volumes; if it will stay as breezy as it is now or take a darker turn. But I want to read more! 4 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “Life of Melody” by Mari Costa

*This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review.

Fairy Godfather Razz and troll Bon find a human child in the woods. Razz wants to try his hand at raising his own godchild from birth to make sure he can do his job effectively but Bon doesn’t trust him and refuses to just give the child up. They reach a compromise by raising the child together as a family. They have to play at being a couple at first but over time develop feelings.

This is a really cute and sweet story perfect for a quick read. It has just enough emotion to get its point across and doesn’t overplay the angst or overstay its welcome. My only problem is not getting to know as much of this world as I’d like to. Sometimes books this short can feel incomplete but here, I just liked it so much I’d like to learn more. Everything is so warm and charming that I’d love to keep going. 4.9 out of 5.

It’s That Time of Year!

Now that my last project is finished, I’ve decided to do NaNoWriMo this year. Now that I have Shelley and I’m not writing things in a notebook, I think I can try and pull this off. I can just sync the file and put the words into the word counter on the site instead of having written words to type up. If you wanna track my progress I’ll be posting daily updates but you can also be my buddy on the site if you’re interested.

I’ve been prepping for this on the sly and I have a chapter by chapter breakdown of what I want to happen. I’m not sure if it will end up being 50,000 words and I’m not going to fluff it to fill a word count but I will try to complete the story in a month. My core idea is a clean but dark age gap lesbian romance where the main characters are witches. I think even with the time crunch, it will be fun to work on!

I’ll also try to get back to posting reviews if I have time.

Sara is a new student at an exclusive and unique all girls boarding school. By chance she meets the most popular student, Silje and forms a fast relationship that blooms quickly into something more.

This is poetic and beautiful, also a bit haunting. But I have no frikkin clue what this is all about. There’s some sinister all girls boarding school in the middle of nowhere and they learn magic but is so strict if you break the rules you go to a special room for punishment, there’s implied genetic testing going on, and the mysterious school is eliminating these girls on by one until only one remains and for… What?

Don’t get me wrong, this is emotional and lovely but by the end all I had were questions that left me frustrated. 3.9 out of 5.

Seven years have passed and Sibylla is captured by the Troll Queen, jeopardizing the prophesy she must fulfill

There’s some interesting palace intrigue going on here in this rich fantasy world. There’s a lot of lore to play around with and I didn’t expect a 7 year jump from the first volume. That’s an interesting choice since most stories are quick to get to the big prophesy part right away. This is an interesting twist giving room for a compelling cast of characters. I like the uniqueness. 4 out of 5.

Like most teenagers, Morgan dreams of leaving her small seaside town so she can be herself. After her parents divorce, her and her little brother are having trouble dealing with all the emotions, leading Morgan to take a walk near a cliff; only to be saved by an old and exceptional friend.

This was a sweet book with some great representation and a nice simple story. It’s perfect for it’s age group and had beautiful art. I would have liked to see more of it but the ending is satisfactory as it is and makes this all a light hearted read with great characters. 4.5 out of 5.
