Arisu is an aimless young man. He doesn’t care about school and wishes he could run away to another world. He gets his wish but not how he expected with him and his friends dropped into a series of dangerous games.

Yes, I did see the show before I read this so, I did know what to expect (mostly) from the basic plot. This is a tense, bloody competition with a compelling story. The characters are a nice mix of personalities so things stay interesting both in and out of the deadly games. There’s some good mystery elements and problem solving, and I’m excited for the next volume. 4 out of 5.

Satomi is a first year high school student ready to have the high school crush experience. She had a crush on someone in middle school but never told him, something she vows won’t happen again. On the way to school, a pervert tries to grope her but she is saved by Yagyu, a boy in the same grade as her. Now Satomi is given her chance to keep the promise she made to herself to make sure she confesses her love.

If you are in the market for a lighthearted, clean, cutesy love story, this is a sweet read. It’s simple and to the point with all the best parts of this genre. 3.5 out of 5.

Deadpool is contacted by the Avengers for a special mission: To join the Samurai Squad, a Japan based Avengers team.

This a cute read with Deadpool in all his fourth wall breaking glory and the typical tropes of an action manga. It’s funny, enjoyable, and I think Marvel fans and manga fans will enjoy this fun romp. The people Deadpool work with play off our main character well and the art is perfect for this sort of story. 3.9 out of 5.

Today’s Workout: Breaking the budget…

wp-1645040309220

I had a webinar about a bunch of awesome graphic novels that will be published in the next few months so, while I was hurriedly ordering them for my collection, I did some quick under desk biking.

I think I screwed up my collection development budget…

Anyway! This was a quick way to get in some cardio in a profession where we spend most of our time sitting in a chair. If I don’t go somewhere on my lunch break and/or run after work for 30 minutes or more, I struggle to hit 3,000 steps in a day. Having the under desk peddler to do some quick low-impact cardio to pump my heart rate up and move my legs is better than not moving at all.

#notsponsored #notanad

Granted, this is probably not the high intensity calorie burn that is necessary for some more impressive weight loss, but moving a little is better than not moving at all.

In terms of food, I think I did OK today. I’m on MyFitnessPal if you wanna see my caloric intake. I am brutally honest on there. If you wanna follow me there, my username is lightinash. I’m not shy. Feel free to give me a follow! Leave a comment when I eat popcorn for dinner! Go for it. Just don’t be a fatphobic jackass, and we’re good.

Today’s Workout: More Multitasking

wp-1644969882656

Since I’m worried about writing more books but don’t want to miss out on my cardio, I’m back to the desk bike while I work. The good news is I finished one short story and started another one right after. My goal is to have a back log of completed work and then schedule regular release dates. But, we’ll see how it goes.

As for my weight, there hasn’t been much of a change other than the standard 1-2 pound fluctuations. I’ll give an update when there’s a substantial change.

There is no such thing as a perfect adaptation. This show, while I had fun watching it, had some glaring flaws and I can totally see where there needed to be improvement. ESPECIALLY the shameful treatment of Vicious. I was more annoyed with him than fearful of him; unlike in the anime where he is terrifying. Jet, Faye and Spike were all fine to me but I am so mad that this got canned before we could see Ed.

I sincerely hope someone else picks this series back up if for nothing else but seeing Ein and Ed interact in live action and to correct the mistakes of the first season. There are plenty of shows that took feedback and fixed things as the show went on. And considering what other trash somehow keeps going in media; I hope someone gives this another chance.

While the school cultural festival continues, Rumiko realizes she’s not the only one with feeling for Tadano and her friend Shoko is now her rival.

I’m gonna do a bit of a spoiler here but, I love that this volume doesn’t descend into the mean girl, in-fighting trope and these two friends just talk it out and agree not to let this affect their friendship. This also means Shoko is gaining more confidence and talking more instead of writing down notes. Following along since volume one with all these cute stories makes this milestone very satisfying and a natural progression. 5 out of 5.

Finally Watched It – Challenge Edition: “Philosophy of a Knife” (2008)

This movie is a docu-drama of the horrific experiments that went on at Unit 731.

Yeah. That’s about it. There conflicting reports of the absolute horrors that were committed but, aside from what I hope is sensationalism in this movie, me and my non-unethical scientist brain had several questions as to the scientific validity of what the absolute fuck was going on. I swear, some of the shit that goes on in this movie is less “what can we learn from this” and more “I’mma stab this sharp object in the general area of something I think is important and fuckiddy-do, let’s write down what happens.” Not to spoil things and this is probably my 2022, not a medical doctor bias but… Even dehumanizing these people as “logs” (omfg I just hope I never have to see people this way…), there are some baffling skips in the scientific method that make no sense to me.

And again, there’s historical information that has been destroyed and is missing so, there’s a ton of drama in this; including a young soldier who falls in love with a “log” and… You know what? I’m gonna spoil this. Because I was actually screaming at my computer screen! The war is ending. The entire area is told to destroy everything, including the test subjects. So, this soldier had taken a liking to one of the subjects and he’s been keeping her (relatively) safe. But in the end, she has to go. What does he do? He gives her a taste of freedom. She finally breathes free air, touches flowers, and sees the sun. At this point, I’m thinking this is an “Of Mice and Men” moment and he’s gonna mercy kill her. Okay. That’s the world we’re in when it comes to this docu-drama but… They had to fuck THAT up. This soldier couldn’t have the fucking consideration to one shot her. He derps to shoot her to wound at first, walk up to her, LOOK HER IN THE EYE, then take the final shot. Then having the absolute nerve to give the impression he felt like he did the right thing in the end?

Even after having to watch the sensationalized experiments for the entire runtime (to the point like with August Underground, I was waiting for this to just move on), I was left with this feeling of fatigue. There were live interviews where I felt I learned something but the overall experience left me wishing more of this was historical information and less drama. Yeah, this is in the disturbing movie you don’t dare to watch genre but I found myself being more upset about the hacksaw distortion of what these characters thought research was than the gore on screen. Granted, my 2022 non-wartime, not a medical doctor or scientific researcher brain came up with 4-6 ways of conducting certain experiments in a manner that left less variables (there was a literal zombie movie trope where they didn’t restrain a disease ridden delirious patient – who knows he’s a disposable prisoner and has nothing to lose – and he bit a doctor) but even then, I felt pissed off at the end of it. Especially with that “Gosh, I think I’m doing a good thing” soldier in the end.

There are plenty of types of media I’ve reviewed on my blog where I say what I have consumed is a good touchstone for further research into historical events. I don’t feel I can confidently say that here. If you want dramatized historical gore, go for it, I guess? I had more of a visceral and traumatic reaction to Schindler’s List. Perhaps Unit 731 needs the same treatment and needs a more serious movie.

With a vampire hunter on the loose, Ko and Nazuna go looking for a way to keep Nazuna safe while wondering what it would mean for them to be in love; as that is the only way for Ko to achieve his dream of Nazuna turning him into a vampire.

I like the way this series establishes a vampire’s weakness being connected to a personal object in their past. It’s original and a way to find out more about our main characters. It’s really interesting and I look forward to more. 4 out of 5.

Today’s Workout: Last Day of Cardio

I had a database training today so, again, rather than just sit there, I brought out the under desk bike for half of it.

If my boss reads this, yes, I was still paying attention. I don’t subscribe to most of these things. But we should. They’re cool.

Anyway, I did my best to get my heartrate up as much as possible and, unlike my desk bike at home, my thighs didn’t feel like they’re going to fall out from under me. This is my last cardio for the week. I’m taking tomorrow off to do some much needed cleaning around the house and organizing more in my office so I can work in there efficiently. I’ve been doing a great job of decluttering (I may start selling some collectables and such in my shop, we’ll see) but I’m behind on general cleaning. I work full time then immediately start writing when I get home. Other than a quick mop up, I haven’t had time. I’m betting I’ll burn plenty of calories doing that.
