Finally Watched It: REC 2

I never really have much faith in horror movie sequels but… Wow. REC 2 is just amazing. I watched REC a while ago and when they heard they made more, I jumped at the chance to see it.

This film picks up pretty much where the first left off, with a backup team going in on the same mysterious emergency call. They go in with who they think is a doctor to find a cure for whatever contagion is in the building and face the horrors within the doomed building.

Holy shit, this movie is creepy. It’s well written, well paced, and the ending was satisfying. These movies really do follow the ‘less is more’ track and it makes for a really tense movie. It was almost as good as the first but it certainly didn’t take a giant step back like some other sequels. People make derpy decisions, sometimes the camera work can make you a little dizzy, and the twist as to what the infection is had me rolling my eyes a little but I can’t say it ruined the movie for me. But obviously, don’t watch this one before you watch REC.

There is a third and fourth movie and I really wonder if they can keep up the quality. I’ll be reviewing those in the coming weeks.

April Writing Update

I haven’t just been plowing through all these books to review, I have been writing! Probably not as much as I should, seeing how I usually don’t hit my page goal for the day, but if I feel blocked on a story I go ahead and read through my pile of books.

Don’t even ask how the short stories are going… They’re not. Consider them stalled until come brilliant idea hits me.

The good news is, despite not always hitting that daily goal, there are some days where I fall asleep mid sentence because I just wouldn’t be able to stop writing. This means good things for the third book in the First Brood series. I really hope this will finally be the year I get it finished.

As for the blog, expect more reviews of the random books I find on the web, more movies, more comics, and perhaps even more art. You can see the “Finally Watched It” series has begun and I’m planning a series of posts called “There, I Fixed It” where I take movies that either sucked entirely or had a good concept but shit/lazy execution and plot out how they could have been improved. I get so frustrated with movies that fail so I decided to complain about it.

Yay?

There’s some exciting things coming down the pipe and I feel pretty awesome about them so I hope you all enjoy!

A Writer And Her Vices

I spent my weekend watching awesome movies and one of the movies I watched was Reaching for the Moon. It was a beautiful movie but the poet; Elizabeth Bishop (played by Miranda Otto) has a drinking problem. I see a lot of that in movies and it really got me wondering what is it about writers (or creative types in general) that lends itself to substance abuse. This article from The Guardian talks about how prevalent this is and us creative types seem to really have issues with trying to drown our demons.

So, what is it about the creative process that drives us to drugs and alcohol? Personally, I don’t have issues with drinking (I’ve often said I’m too cheap to be an alcoholic or drug addict… That shit COSTS!) but man, the creative juices flow easier when the wine flows with it. Is there so much going on in our heads that to calm it down, we use (or abuse) drugs or alcohol? Are there so many people, places, and plot lines all slamming against the day to day bullshit we have to slog through to keep the lights on and the roof patched that to just free the muse and get him/her to focus, you have to ply inspiration with a shot of bourbon? Is non-creative life so abysmal to us that a line of cocaine is the only way to push it completely out of the way to let us work?

Its an odd thing to afflict so many of us; and the best of us at that. What is haunting us? What’s haunting you?

NaBloPoMo Prompt #7

If you had to be trapped inside a movie for 5 days, which movie
would you pick?

I think I would pick Hocus Pocus. Because what’s life with out a fun musical number!? >D

Playing Movie Catch Up – Saw Franchise

Seeing as how Halloween is over, you may wonder why I made an effort to plow through all the movies. Mostly because I actually enjoy this series and missed the final chapter and I had to wait till the kiddo wasn’t around to watch them. So, in between loads of laundry I watched them all on my DVDR.

My brain still hurts. That much gore all in one sitting made me so tired. But I was VERY satisfied with the way the story ended and sorta pissed that the effects looked so damn fake in the last movie. I mean the blood was PINK for gods sake… >_< But at least it’s all done and I can say I’ve seen them all.

I gotta say overall the series is pretty good. I liked the writing in it and holy hell, did I ever cringe from the yuckyness… ;___; And now I can cross them off my list of movies that it bugs me I haven’t seen.

Next up is R.I.P.D. Yes, I am aware everyone has said it sucks but everyone also said After Earth sucked and I honestly didn’t think it was so bad.

Popping in.

Hello everyone! Just a quick note as I’ve been busy-ish the last few days. Even though I had yesterday off from dayjob, I used the time to clean the house and watch some very strange movies I borrowed; The Wicker Tree and Uzumaki.

In writing news, I’m plugging away at finishing Winter Boot and editing Greenhouse. Both are proceeding slowly but surely. I want to make sure I get these right.

That’s about it. See ya on the flip side!
