Lenni Reviews: “Your Lie In April” vol 4 by Naoshi Arakawa

In this volume, the competition continues and we meet Emi Igawa and Takeshi Aiza who have been waiting for Kosei to return to the stage. We learn that the boy  once known as the Human Metronome inspired these other two to take up piano in the first place! Watching a person they admire freeze on stage fuels their intense performances and when Kosei takes the stage, at first he seems ok. But before their eyes, the same freeze happens again. They say in the book that he can’t hear the music so, what does he hear? His deceased mother’s voice berating him for his failures. We learn how abusive she was to Kosei when he was playing as a child and it’s no wonder he freezes when playing.

One thing that annoyed me a little is how Kosei has friends but he never tells anyone that the last thing he told his mother (after she finished beating him with her cane) was he wished she would just die. That’s a pretty damn good reason to not want to play or have flashbacks of how she treated him while he’s playing. So, with people around him completely unaware of what he went through, it seems empty for them to tell him “Oh just believe in yourself! Play for who you want to play for!” It’s much more complicated than that. I hope Kosei at least tells his closest friends, as honestly, it’s none of the judge’s or other competitor’s business. But man, am I ever rooting fo him.

Lenni Reviews: Hazel Takes Over (Lyon Road Vets #3) by Sue Brown

I purchased this book for free from All Romance Ebooks and is intended for 18+.

This book brings us back to Evan and Peter from the first book in this series. Now that Peter has settled into his new life, he is surprised Evan doesn’t bug him about getting a new pet. After Harry’s death, Peter still doesn’t feel ready. But Evan isn’t the type to wait until Peter is ready and brings Hazel into the picture, insuring Peter falls in love with the pup and can’t say now. Peter isn’t happy having these plans made behind his back so the hope is he will overcome his past pain and love this little one as much as he loved Harry.

While the book makes you think the book will be mostly about Hazel, the only interesting conflict in this book is Peter’s ex-wife, Toni, getting abused by her current boyfriend. The rest of it is mundane everyday stuff. While I have been known to enjoy a little slice-of-life story, this was all fluff and boring as all get out. Getting a new puppy and learning to live with it would have been a fitting epilogue to the first book. I just couldn’t get into it. I feel generous in giving this one a 2 out of 5 for taking a step forward in the character’s lives, written well, but ultimately boring.

Lenni Reviews: “Hairy Harry’s Car Seat” (Lyon Road Vets#1) by Sue Brown

I purchased this book from Amazon and is intended for 18+.

Divorced father of two, Peter, has to say goodbye to his best friend and Wolfhound/Terrier mix, Harry. When Peter takes Harry to the vet, he is attended by a new doctor; Evan Wells. The pair become friends as Even helps Peter deal with losing Harry and Peter notices he doesn’t quite mind when Evan casually touches him despite the fact he’s straight. Will Peter be able to reconcile having feelings for a man after considering himself straight for so long?

I really empathized with losing a pet and it was sweet to see happiness come out of grief but I would have liked if it wasn’t ‘gay for you.’ Those always strike me as a little strange. Not entirely off-putting, but strange. I guess it’s nice to be attracted to someone for more than the presence or lack of dangly bits but Peter and Evan are nice enough characters to read to keep my focus off that strange trope. They’re a sweet couple and the intimate scenes aren’t too over the top. I give it a solid 3 out of 5 because it can be a little frustrating if a character just doesn’t come out and say what they feel and I selfishly would have liked Paul to also fall in love with another dog as well.

Lenni Reviews: “Hopebreaker: A Steampunk Dystopian Fantasy” by Dean F. Wilson

I purchased this book for free from Amazon.

Jacob is a smuggler who ends up imprisoned when a job goes bad. Once there, is meets a man called Whistler who is a member of the Resistance. In his world, The Regime controls everything, right down to women’s wombs. Humans can no longer give birth to humans, only demons and they are slowly taking over the population. Guilt prompts Jacob to stay and help fight, taking on a mission to destroy one of the factories where the demons manufacture the drug Hope with the aptly named experimental landship; Hopebreaker.

The mission to destroy the factory is an interesting story and written well, but I could have used a bit more world-building. I didn’t get a real sense of the demons other than they’re bad and trying to overtake the human population. Overall, this is a pretty cool story. I got just invested enough to want to know what will happen at the end. Jacob is a typical bad boy turned rebel and provides an entertaining read in his perspective. A little snarky with his teasing sometimes but once he gets to business, he’s fun and determined. The steampunk elements are technical enough to be believable but don’t bog down the story or interrupt the narrative. The spy and espionage elements hit all the right notes and of course the story ends in a way to lead right to the sequel. And I certainly wouldn’t mind reading it. Solid 3.5.

Lenni Reviews: “Chaos Unchained: Outlaw MC Book 1” by James Cox

I purchased this book for free from All Romance E-Books. Intended for 18+.

Our main character is named Chaos and a member of a motorcycle gang rebelling against the oppressive regime currently in power. He lives in a world where Earth is now a prison planet, which is where Chaos is headed to serve 6 months for drinking, which is illegal. While he manages to survive by being a fighter and competing for extra rations, he meets a man named Beau, who is currently serving time for preventing another man from being beaten. The two pair up but Beau is getting out sooner than Chaos. Will Chaos be able to keep his rages under control with Beau gone and will Beau keep his promise to be waiting when Chaos gets out?

This is an interesting start to a series with good world-building but you don’t get to spend much time in it. The story focuses on Chaos and Beau’s fast forming romance and hot sex. This book doesn’t flinch from bad language, smut, and violence but Beau is such a lovable little cutie, I found myself smiling more often than not. I give it a 3.5 out of 5 for taking a chance but ending up more on the crude side than visceral (which I think what the book was trying to go for?). Maybe a little more detail would have provided that extra bit of poetry to give it more impact.

Lenni Reviews: “DC Comics Bombshells” Volume 1

This graphic novel puts DC’s heroines in a WWII setting. It is really creative to see how the creators fit the modern heroes in this setting; Batgirl as a League of Their Own like ball player, Kara as a member of the Soviet pilots The Night Witches, Zatanna working as a stage magician in a club owned by Joker’s Daughter; all really cool roles executed in believable ways. I don’t wanna give too much away plot wise so I don’t ruin the discoveries you’ll fine while reading.

The art is beautiful and all in all, it’s just a damn cool story! It was fun to see my favorite heroes and villains in different roles and in a wartime setting where super powers can make the stakes even higher. Espionage, air fights, seedy bars; just fantastic. I give it a solid 4.9 because seeing Joker’s Daughter made me roll my eyes for a second there (very Rule 63) but the presence of Constantine made it all worth it.

Lenni Reviews: “Her Forbidden Alpha” by Tabitha Conall

I purchased this book for free from All Romance Ebooks. Mature audiences only.

Aislinn Cavett is the daughter of the leader of a human supremacy group that has begrudgingly accepted peace talks with Darius Bishop; the alpha of the North American werewolf pack. When Darius sees Aislinn serving food at this meeting, he recognizes her as his mate and she is intrigued by Darius despite her father being a complete bigot. When the talks break down and it looks like there’s gonna be a massacre, Darius ends up taking Aislinn as a hostage. They grow closer as she with him and they both have to decide if their love is worth risking all-out war between humans and werewolves.\

This is a well written forbidden love story. Darius and Aislinn make a good couple, they make rational decisions despite the whirlwind romance, and I give major props to Conall for writing Aislinn as a strong character. She doesn’t kick ass but when the chips are down, she’s no damsel. You also get your happy ending but there is still an overarching conflict in the world that’s been built. I give this a 4 out of 5 for being fun and unexpectedly practical in some ways.

Lenni Reviews: “A Serious Thing” by Annabelle Jacobs

I purchased this book for free from All Romance Ebooks and is intended for 18+.

Patrick and Will have been together for awhile and Patrick has decided it’s time to get serious and say those special three words. Finally having some time to themselves over Christmas break, Patrick has big plans to tell Will he loves him on Christmas Day.

Will and Patrick are almost too cute and infatuated with each other. The love between them is sweet and it’s written well. This is a short slice of life story that is perfect to read curled up with some hot cocoa by a fire. I’d give it a 3 since I think this story would have has more of an impact on me if I was familiar with the series these characters are from. Standing alone, I simply thought “Aw, that was cute.” and moved on to the next thing without giving it much more thought.

Lenni Reviews: Noragami: Stray God vol 2 by Adachitoka

In this volume, we get to learn a little about Yukine, who is Yato’s new Shinki. We get some hints as to what his life may have been like and what his new abilities are. Yato also runs into some old friends and enemies as some of his own past is revealed.

Volume 2 picks up on the action and the feels; giving us a chance to get to know everyone better. There are a couple plot threads that are started, which I will try not to spoil. Yato’s done some gnarly shit in his past and the bad habits Yukine may have had when he was alive have been magnified now that he’s dead and been made a Shinki. We even get to meet some other gods and see what they’re like and how Yato could be living if he was able to accomplish his goals. And that hot woman on the cover is indeed in this volume and she kicks ass.  Can’t wait to see more of her in the next volume since this one ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.

Lenni Reviews: “Until We Meet Once More” by Josh Lanyon

I purchased this book for free from All Romance Ebooks and is intended for 18+.

Vick Black, Army Ranger Captain, is sent on a rescue mission. Known as ‘Stone Man’ for his focus and determination, he is certain he can get in and get out with his rescue without a problem. Then he hears the name of the POW he’s being sent to retrieve; his former lover. Then the Stone Man begins to crack. It’s not just another mission anymore, now it’s personal.

I found it a bit difficult to get into this one. It felt a little distant; almost clinical despite the intriguing premise. I ended up being more interested in the rescue mission itself rather hand the romantic relationship. However, by the end of this short read, I felt satisfied and entertained. I wish there was more to is as I think the reason why it felt distance is because everything was so clipped. More length may have had the story and characters make a bigger impact on me. As is, this story is nothing special but certainly not terrible. A firm 3.5.
