In this volume, we are introduced to a Ghoul named The Gourmet; a creepy little bastard with designs on Ken. We also meet Itori, another Ghoul in the neighborhood who gives Ken (and us) a crash course in human/Ghoul hybrids.

There was exactly zero subtlety in making The Gourmet a creepy asshole so when he does get Ken in trouble, it is no surprise at all. It’s interesting to see the little underground cliques and turf disputes the Ghouls have; making them more complex than your titular baddies living on the fringes of society. I would love for Ken to just kill off The Gourmet and lay down once and for all that he is not to be fucked with; but Ken is still in that place where he wants to be a decent person and I’m ok with that at this point. That reluctance hasn’t gotten anyone else killed yet but I hope when the chips are down, Ken will do whatever needs doing.

Ken and Touka do a little snooping at the Ghoul Society to find the group is targeting Ghouls and are after Hinami; despite the fact she has never attacked a human. As the hunters close in, Ken needs to get a firmer grip on his blossoming powers so he can defend himself and others without breaking his vow not to kill.

It was awesome to see Ken wearing his fancy (read: creepy as fuck) mask and using his powers. I don’t think he’s gonna pull off his bridge-between-two-worlds thing he wants to do but his development from passive to proactive has had a good pace so far. If it was instant then it wouldn’t be believable. I’m sure it will take more for him to really come to terms will what he his now and eating human flesh, but his intentions are good thus far.

Ken is still learning the ropes about being part Ghoul and what other full Ghouls have to do in order to blend into the human world without hunting humans. We are also introduced to the Commission of Counter Ghoul agents; who the Ghouls refer to as doves. They, of course, don’t bother to distinguish between Ghouls who go out of their way to hurt people and those who just want to live in peace. When an innocent Ghoul is killed, Ken and Touka are trapped between the desire for survival and revenge.

It kinda figures that the people who think they’re ‘do-gooders’ are just as sick and twisted as the monsters they’re hunting but there is a sizable threat in these Ghouls. They still eat people. That’s not an excuse to completely avoid any sort of discretion of investigation when it comes to death by Ghoul, of course. But that’s the sort of moral quandary that keeps stories like this interesting. We’ll have to see how twisted the Doves are and how vicious the Ghouls can be.

Ken Kaneki is a shy guy who has a crush on a girl named Rize Kamishiro. By chance he finally talks to her and they agree on a date. They like the same books, they’re the same blood type, the same age… And their date goes fantastically.

Until she tries to eat him.

IN this world; human eating ghouls exist and Rize set a trap for Ken. By some miracle he survives but the doctors save him by implanting Rize’s organs into him. Now human food tastes revolting and he craves human flesh. A human/ghoul hybrid, Ken learned there are more ghouls than he thought and he has a hunger and abilities he’s never dreamed of.

So far, Touka Kirashima is my favorite character. She’s already a ghoul so when she finds out Ken is half ghoul and he starts moralizing, she has none of his shit, crams the mean down his throat, and tells him to get the fuck over himself. I love characters that cut the bullshit ASAP. Of course it can take time to deal with such a massive life change but don’t go judging ghouls when you know what the hunger feels like now. Also, you could be dead. Prioritize, dearie.
