Now that the fight with Bishamonten is over, Yato has to really decide if he will cut ties with Hiyori for her own safety (despite the little problem of her jumping out of her body in spirit form… Which Yato said he would fix for her). But Yato cannot survive unless a human remembers him and any clients forget about him after the job is done. Not to mention Stray is still a threat and trying to get Yato in to deep trouble.

Yato is super adorable and super scary at the same time in this volume. We’re getting more into Yato’s past and why he wants a shrine so badly. There’s also the little mater of Yato’s father. Why has Stray been told to bring Yato back to his dad? I guess we’ll find out but Yato doesn’t seem to want anything to do with him.

Oh yes, this one is a 2 for 1. Because man, shit gets real.

Between these two volumes we find out why Bishamonten hates Yato so much and why he is known as a killer. Kugaha’s plot is revealed, Yato, Hiyori, and Yukini help with the battle and WOW were there a bunch of casualties. And the battle starts in one volume and continues in the next, hence why I couldn’t stop between books to review them separately.

As volume 6 ended, I was really left wondering if Bishamonten would learn her lesson about jumping to conclusions or ignoring her pain. I suppose the latter volumes will have to tell me but the fact that I could not stop reading long enough to write a review between volumes says it all. Well written characters, tight storytelling… Just wow. I’m hooked on this series.

This volume focuses less on Yato and more about the bikini-clad warrior goddess, Bishamonten. In the previous volumes she has had a great deal of fan service like shots an the story gives us a the reason for these is the fact she has so many shinki, it’s wearing her down and thus needs frequent cleansing baths and treatment from a healer named Kugaha. Behind the scenes, a stray shinki with so many names they just call her Stray, is plotting behind the scenes causing one of Bishamonten’s shinki to infect her with blight by corrupting her.

What I like about this manga is the ability to take seemingly benevolent concepts like having a weapon spirit to increase your strength; and turns it on it’s head. Bishamonten’s zeal to save all these spirits is hurting her because there are just so many. And Stray? She freaks me right the hell out. She’s gonna be trouble.

In this volume, Yukine’s naughty behavior shows it’s deadly consequences. Each bad deed physically infects Yato with the blight and in turn, infects Yukine with the same sort of negative energy in the spirits the pair has been fighting so far. But Yato is short on allies and Yukine is bitter about dying so young. Will they be saved or will Yukine’s bitterness kill them both?

After all the buildup, I was glad to see Yukine be held accountable. If you’ve made it this far into the series, you should know Yukine was stealing; even from Hiyori who was kind enough to allow Yukine to live with her. Watching Yukine act like an ungrateful brat with nobody doing anything about it was getting frustrating and I’m glad that story like is resolved. I left this volume looking forward to seeing Yato and Yukine develop together as a team.

In this volume, we get to learn a little about Yukine, who is Yato’s new Shinki. We get some hints as to what his life may have been like and what his new abilities are. Yato also runs into some old friends and enemies as some of his own past is revealed.

Volume 2 picks up on the action and the feels; giving us a chance to get to know everyone better. There are a couple plot threads that are started, which I will try not to spoil. Yato’s done some gnarly shit in his past and the bad habits Yukine may have had when he was alive have been magnified now that he’s dead and been made a Shinki. We even get to meet some other gods and see what they’re like and how Yato could be living if he was able to accomplish his goals. And that hot woman on the cover is indeed in this volume and she kicks ass.  Can’t wait to see more of her in the next volume since this one ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.

This manga was sent to me as a Loot Crate exclusive.

Yato is a bottom tier god trying to increase his status by taking odd jobs for mortals for a few yen a pop. In the meantime, he lives on the streets waiting for someone to tall him as only people who really need his services can even see his number.

In this first volume, we are introduced to Yato and his shinki, Hanki. A shinki is a living weapon who looks like a person but can transform into a weapon. Hanki quits after the first chapter because Yato is a bit of an ass. Bur he happens upon a girl named Hiyori who can see spirits, astral project, and loves wrestling (it looks more like MMA but they call it wrestling). She runs into Yato when he’s hot on the trail of a lost kitten for a young boy who finds his number.

So far, this series is amusing. Yato is your typical lovable oaf and Hyori is the typical special powered high school girl who helps him. It’s difficult to predict where a manga will go by just the first volume but it was funny and creative enough for me to want to read the next volume. I give it a 4 out of 5 because I can see the potential for future amusement and I find the interaction between Yato and Hiyori funny.
