January Birchbox

I am always nervous about chemical peels. I keep thinking my skin will have a terrible reaction to it. Like the rest of me, my skin has very simple needs; cleaning and moisturizing. That’s all. Anything else and my skin doesn’t react well. Since this is just a 3-minute peel, I am tempted to give it a shot. Of course, I’ll post about it when I do.

A for the rest, it’s familiar territory. I wouldn’t be able to tell you if any of these would be any better than dollar store make up (since most of the time I’m too groggy in the morning to wear any) but it’s easy to wear and doesn’t make my skin hate me. Coming from me? That’s high praise.

This isn’t a bad collection but my favorite is the soap. It has a nice mild smell; not too overpowering. Although I do wonder if I can use the brow pencil as eyeliner since I don’t have any eyebrow issues but failing that, I’m sure I can find someone who will take it off my hands.

I’ve been getting a decent amount of anti-aging products and honestly, they all seem to be working for me in a very general sense. I can’t say I’ve noticed any major changes in my skin and I’ve always been told I either look my age or younger for the simple fact I take really good care of my skin aside for using anti-aging products. But a cashier recently told me I look 26 so something must be working. XD

This box was kinda random to me but the collection is all things I will actually use. I am all into the anti-aging and skin protection right now but lip stuff is not usually in the equation. And I had to look up what the heck a strobing pencil was. When I first looked at it, I thought it was eye liner or lip liner to go with the lip gloss.

That’s why I continue to get these boxes. I usually have no clue such things even exist much less what to use them for. I am honestly afraid to put that on my face because I am CONVINCED I will use it wrong.

I did finally use the Matrix shampoo from the January box, and I did like how it made my hair feel after repeated colorings and liberal use of the flat iron. I didn’t feel any build up and the conditioner was potent enough to get though my thick hair. But would I shell out $25 for it? Nope, not when I can get V05 for $0.33 when it’s on a good sale.

It figures I’d get a wave spray when I start flat ironing my hair again. :p

The perfume is nice, I am happy with the primer and mascara but I am most excited about the firming cream. If you’ve been following my running, you’ll know I’ve been working out pretty hard and regularly. My body has been changing in a LOT of ways which include more muscle burning away the fat on my body. This has left me with some sagging skin. Not on Skin Tight levels, just enough for me to think “Huh, that wasn’t there before.” I’m not morphing into an overly vain person but I wouldn’t mind it not being there. I plan to give this a try and see how it works. I’ve used the Fat Girl Slim products and found them kinda meh but at that time, I wasn’t working out to the degree I am now. And yes, floppy skin is a concern from a health standpoint mostly; not just aesthetics.

I will review that in particular since it’s the product I have the most interest in and use for right now. Look out for that in the future.

This box reminded me that I need to start wearing makeup regularly again. I don’t wake up early enough half the time. I have all this great stuff and it’s just sitting around. I do like the idea of makeup removal wipes as a faster solution for cleaning off my face after work but before my workouts. Since I’m getting more and more interested in running, I do have concerns about the makeup getting into my pores once I start sweating.

As for the blowout spray, I’ll bever use it since I use a flat iron instead. Same goes for the texturizing spray. Due to my hair type, using products to make my hair bigger is the exact opposite of what I need to happen. XD I prefer smoothing and frizz control.

This was a 50/50 sort of box where I wasn’t as impressed as I feel I could have been. But they can’t all be diamonds so I’m not gonna complain too much.

This is an interesting mix of things… I like the perfume this time; which is rare for me. I usually think whatever they send to me is too flowery but this one is… Well, dark as it says. I’ve yet to try the skin stuff (I recently had a reaction to another cream I was using so I’m hesitant) but the volume spray is absolutely useless to me. I have mixed chick, giant, dry, kinky, pouffy hair so having a spray to make it even bigger is not something I’m in the market for. That’s an item I’ll be giving away to a friend.

The mirror is pretty cool and I’ve been needing a new one since the one I currently carry around is breaking. The CC cream, the texture spray and the foot cream I will probably hand off to someone else because I have very poofy hair with plenty of texture, I don’t use CC cream, and I honestly discovered that using Vicks on my feet actually works! I put a thin layer on and sleep in socks overnight and WOW. Amazingly smooth. I have a cracked heel problem and POOF! Cracks gone in a couple of nights.

As for the eyeliner? I found it really easy to use and even a woman like me who hardly wears makeup keeps black eyeliner on standby.

All in all decent box. I feel lucky I can pass on anything I can’t use.

These days all the boxes seem to be similar. Shampoo, conditioner, skin care item, perfume, mascara, rinse and repeat. I seem to recall these being a little more creative in the past. Maybe it’s me, but it seemed more random than it is now. You would get chocolate, a little charm, a bracelet… It’s getting less fun knowing it’s the same thing over and over.

Ah well… It’s still all stuff I can use so not all bad. And I can’t attest to how expensive it must be to get food or jewelry samples in these things so I’m forgiving.

  • Erno Laszlo Detoxifying Double Cleanse Travel Set
  • evo liquid rollers curl balm
  • TOCCA Travel Fragrance Spray – Florence
  • Curly Hair Solutions™ Leave-In Conditioner
  • Milk Makeup Highlighter

I am enjoying the personalization options these days. I am getting more targeted samples than in the past. I still wish they were putting in little bits of chocolate and stuff like they used to…

As these are all new to me, I’ll have to see how effective these curl products are. I’m forever getting things that don’t moisturize enough so I end up with a head full of friz. I hope these work alright.

I gave away the perfume sample because I already have a favorite and I’m not looking to change it. As for the rest, I’ll figure out how to use it eventually. 😉

I have recently begun having my brows done again so this is an interesting pick for me this month. Thin brows aren’t a problem for me so I don’t know exactly how I would use this…

As for the rest of it is all stuff I can use but I don’t see myself buying more of any of it after I use up the samples. There are similar products I use that are a fraction of the cost and work just fine. Any sort of wipes in the summer are appreciated. I’ve been trying to walk every day on my lunch break and when it’s like soup outside, I hate spending the rest of the day sticky and gross.

I wonder when they’re gonna be putting snacks in these boxes again.
