Finally Watched It: “Over The Garden Wall”

Since the episodes are so short and I had some time, I decided to just binge the rest of this show.

My favorite types of shows are the type where you can tell the creators had real love for what they’re making and the freedom to explore their creation. It’s also another show where even though I wish it was longer, I wonder if it’s better off being short and sweet the way it is. You gotta give props to any story that can hook you quickly and leave you wanting more. But anyone who follows a story in any medium –  be it movie franchises, tv shows or book series – know how a series can go sour as it goes on.

Also, this is another show that can be enjoyed by adults and children. I think those types of cartoons are the best these days; especially speaking as a parent who it frequently trapped by horrid media that has me fleeing the room (I’m looking at you, Teen Titans Go). I would rank this show right up there in quality and storytelling with Avatar, Steven Universe, and Gravity Falls. Even Star vs The Forces of Evil. At first you think you’re watching something bright, colorful, and silly but then all of a sudden you’re dealing with some really mature, scary, and intricate situations. And seeing all these different styles of art is very inspiring and I will freely admit the songs have me tapping my toes.

Allow me to take a short mental minute to rant at why most mainstream movies these days can’t make me care about a character in an over 2-hour movie and yet a 20-minute cartoon can make me tear up aaaannnd, I’m done.

To sum up, I think if you like darker fairy tale stories like Secret of NIHM, or if you’re into the above-mentioned cartoons, I think you would enjoy this show. In fact, I think I’m gonna give it another watch just to make sure.

For research purposes, of course.

Finally Watched It: Over The Garden Wall Episode 4: “Songs of the Dark Lantern”

Wirt and Greg are extra special lost so they stop at a tavern to ask for directions. Of course the tavern is insane and asking for directions turns in to a series of off topic song and dance numbers until Wirt mentions the Beast. They warn him about the Beast but Beatrice gets into trouble with the Woodsman and the brothers mistake him for the Beast. After they rescue her, the real Beast appears to taunt the Woodsman about his daughter’s soul inside the lantern he’s carrying and decides to go after the kids.

Right now the Beast is all in shadow but he’s still not as creepy as when the Highwayman in the tavern does his little dance. The super close camera angle and overly smooth animated movements freaked me out. I do enjoy having this singular antagonist, though; and I am loving the Alice in Wonderland vibe I get from this show. It’s so creative, fun, and creepy; I am really enjoying it. Took a dark turn with the girl’s soul in a lantern, though.

Finally Watched It: Over The Garden Wall Episode 3: “Schooltown Follies”

Wirt, Greg, and Beatrice the bluebird continue their journey and come upon a school house run by a nice teacher with a stern father. This episode is just so batshit silly, I giggled the entire time. It’s not as dark as the previous episodes but I like how the colors keep that creepy tone instead of the episode’s content.

My only gripe is now ‘Potatoes and Molasses’ is stuck in my head…

Finally Watched It: Over The Garden Wall Episode 2: “Hard Times at the Huskin’ Bee”

A bluebird named Beatrice offers to guide Wirt and Greg to Adelaide of the Pasture (the good woman of the woods) and help them get home.

Again, I gotta comment on how frikkin’ beautiful this cartoon is. Greg seems to have the potential to be that annoying kind of derpy and Beatrice is awesome. As far as plot, this one is creepier than the last one. Those effing pumpkins are a town full of NOPE. It’s a little dark for young kids but for a warped person like me, I chuckled at several points. It is a fun show and I look forward to more!

Also, it’s really amazing shows like this can pack more feeling and fun into 11 minutes than some 3 hour movies. I’ve said that before and I’ll likely say it again because facts are facts.

Finally Watched It: Over the Garden Wall Episode one – The Old Grist Mill

Yet another Cartoon Network show which garnered gasps of horror when asked about it and I say I’ve never seen it (or even heard of it).

Brothers Wirt and Greg are on their way home when they get lost in the woods. In this episode, they end up at some woodman’s cabin and encounter a wolf that follows the candy trail Greg is leaving behind them.

I think Greg is a lot like Steven from Steven Universe; innocent, silly, and positive no matter what’s happening. This series is wonderfully animated and voiced. It’s a quality I’m not quite used to with a lot of the dreck I see on TV these days (I’m looking at you Teen Titans Go and Breadwinners). So far, it’s the right balance of creepy and cute to be enjoyable.

Since the episodes are so short, I don’t think I’ll do an entry for every single one. They’re only about 10 minutes long. Unless you want me to. So, let me know!
