Sean Quinn is having a tough go of it these days. Not only did his abusive drunkard of a father toss him out for being gay; leaving him homeless and desperate enough to consider selling his body for money, his best friend, Leroy, is stabbed and killed trying to protect Sean. In trying to escape the killer, Sean barrels into the car of Armand La Marche; local Alpha to the North American werewolf counsel. Recognizing Sean has his mate, Armand takes the boy in and vows to keep him save from the murderer.

As fun as this concept is, the characters in it don’t so much as talk or have conversations so much as dump exposition; so all the dialogue comes off as stilted or unnatural. If done well, large amounts of story laden dialogue can be interesting but here, it feels like a lecture. There are some questionable word choices (using ‘gut wrenching’ to describe what I’m assuming is a pleasurable kiss doesn’t sound quite right) and multiple typos made is difficult to get through the book. It’s a shame too because the set up is interesting but the characters and writing are so flat and bland, I gotta give this one a 2 out of 5.

Slayde works as a nanny to Mindy’s three kids. A widow who ends up deployed once again, Slayde manages very well until Mindy’s brother, Drake, drops by saying he’s there to help; completely messing with Slayde’s flow. Not only is Drake a hard-assed cop and unfamiliar with the kids, Slayde is attracted to him. But Drake is straight, right?

This is a cute opposites attract story with some steamy smexy times. In my own opinion, there was a bit much of the kids and the story can be over saccharine sometimes. I found myself skimming over the fluff to get back to the relationship between Drake and Slayde. But by the end, I had a stupid grin on my face because I was happy for them. It’s an upbeat story without too much angst. If that’s what you’re looking for, I give this a solid 3.5 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “Don’t Be Cruel” vol 1 by Yonezou Nekota

Facing the possibility of losing his scholarship, Takashi Negugasa cracks under the pressure and cheats during a test. Unfortunately for him, school delinquent and known playboy, Kideyuki Maya, catches him in the act. In exchange for keeping it secret, Maya blackmails Negugasa into sleeping with him.

As this is a 2 in 1 volume, we see Maya’s interfering cousin, Akira, and the obvious feelings Maya has for Negugasa despite Negugasa’s obliviousness. It’s that “I really like you but I can’t say it” scenario. Once I got passed the coercion (yeah, it’s a little close to straight up non-con) the pair to make a cute couple. As soon as they get out of their own way, that is.

This may be a typical sort of boys love story but its well drawn and the main characters are likable enough to endure the will they/won’t they back and forth (which thankfully doesn’t last all that long). I found it a little odd for Maya to turn around and say Negugasa was manipulating him when Maya was doing the blackmailing in the first place (what an odd character flip…) but hey, at first neither man would admit any feelings at all and I’m a  mush. I’ll admit I like the happy ending. 4.5 out of 5 and I would love to read the next one!

And yes, graphic man-sex in this manga. The explicit content warning is right there on the cover and they mean it.

Lenni Reviews: “The Hustler” by Kay Simone

Excited to try out his new fake ID, Daniel heads to a bar for a few drinks to check out the scene. While there, be meets Wilson, who offers a game of pool. Thinking he can hustle the man, Daniel accepts the game and during it, drunkenly bets Wilson a quickie in the bathroom for the winner of the game.

Is this a thing that happens? I dunno, nobody’s ever offered this to me.

Anyway, this is Daniel’s last hurrah of the summer before he goes back to his swanky private school to find out his new English teacher for the year is Wilson.

While this short story could stand alone (as stated in the description) it really is a taste of a novel called The Aftermath. Daniel is a cocky brat (no pun intended) and I mean that in the best way. Since it’s from Daniel’s perspective, Wilson seems sultry and tempting but it ends right when you find out he’s Daniel’s teacher. Any further delving into his personality will likely have to wait for the novel. As the situation intrigues me, I am going to be reading the full novel when I get a chance. I’d give it a 4 out of 5 for being steamy but too short.

Lenni Reviews: “Bought: A Ripples in the Status Quo Story” by Raissa Phoenix

Jace give himself up as a prisoner to protect his lover who is a spy for their werewolf pack. Expecting to be killed, he instead is purchased by a witch named Elias to be subject to his twisted sexual desires as his slave.

In this world, humans are mostly gone, witches are in charge, and vampires and werewolves serve the witches. This story is short and graphic; Elias is a sadistic and cruel man who enjoys humiliating Jace so there is no romance in this one. If coerced sex and master/slave couplings are your thing, you’ll be fine. If you’re hoping for love here, you will be disappointed.

Overall, it didn’t leave much of an impact or drop me in a world I care enough about to delve any further in the series. It didn’t particularly shock or disgust me, either. I give it a weak 3 out of 5 since there isn’t enough here to make an impression.

Lenni Reviews: “Twisted Dreams: Dreamlands #4) by Felicitas Ivey

**This book contains adult material and is rated 18+**

After the craziness of Unquiet Dreams, Keno is now a ‘guest’ of the wizard Kheper in the Egyptian lands and was forced to give in to the violent nature of his ancestor in order to save Mason’s life and his own. As the unknown Darkness spreads through the Dreamlands, Samojirou takes Mason, Wolf, and Tholf to rescue Keno while Keno and Kheper investigate the Darkness. But will Keno want to be rescued after taking a life?

Keno’s internal struggle about having to kill is the major part of his character development in this book. His ancestor was discussed in such hushed, ominous tones, Keno never wanted to be anything like him. There isn’t time to dwell or escape his pain for long as he works with Kheper; who turns out to be a pretty cool magician and a man of honor – not at all as creepy as he seemed in the previous book.

With two teams coming at the Darkness from two different directions, we get some really detailed and rich writing. You get a sense of realness to a very unreal world. But darnit, if it doesn’t end on a cliffhanger! Man, do I wanna see the Dreamlands come together to beat the Darkness. I’m sure other cultures along with the Japanese and Egyptians will come into play. More of the Vikings would be cool! It would be such an epic showdown. 4.5 out of 5.

The siege on Nippon continues as the Trust has allied with the Egyptians and the lords of Nippon must band together to take back their lands. With the conflict intensifying, Mason tries to find a place under Tamazusa’s protection and Keno struggles against the brutal nature of his ancestor as battle brings it seeping to the surface.

In this book, Keno and Samojiro are headed into “annoying couple” territory. This is a personal pet peeve of mine and I’m sure people won’t agree with me; I have read many a series where the couple you’ve wanted to get together for the entire time keep sending the narrative to a screeching halt so they can bone as much as possible. This is not to say it ruins the book but I found myself skipping over their love scenes to get back to the war going on.

Other than that, I love how this book is not perfectly wrapped up for the next installment. As I received this series in a 4 book bundle (and reviewed one at a time so it didn’t take forever to get these books reviewed for you guys), I was wondering if each book would have a self-contained antagonist or an overarching one. All these little threads of manipulation carry through all three books and their effects don’t just disappear. Out of the three, this one is the most tense and ends with characters injured, separated, and floundering as to what to do next. The writing level and style carry through seamlessly and seeing all these different cultures in the Dreamlands is very cool! Very interesting overall. 4.5 out of 5.

Lenni Reviews: “Healing Hunter’s Heart” by Charlie Cochet

Ari Jannsen and Hunter Devin had a forbidden romance which came to a tragic end. As a werewolf enforcer, Hunter was supposed to keep away from a pureblood like Ari. When they were discovered, Hunter was wounded and cast out of the pack, causing a split within the pack that even separated family members. Hunter and his friend, Tristan Hagan, created a new pack but not only is Hunter empty inside without his mate, Ari’s mother, Skyrah, vowed to destroy them even if it means killing kids or her own son.

I have a weakness for shifter romances since they combine what I love about fantasy with a tolerable amount of romance elements for me (believe it or not, I don’t tend to read romances normally…). The dialog was written excellently and although I didn’t read the first book, I was invested enough in Hunter and Ari’s relationship to be interested in what happened to them. However, the time jumps were disorienting and sometimes te cast of characters felt distractingly large. Overall a decent read but I give it a 3.5 out of 5 for those reasons.

Lenni Reviews: Stormin’ Norman (Lyon Road Vets #4) by: Sue Brown

I purchased this book for free from All Romance Ebooks and is intended for 18+.

Jesse is a covert agent who promised his boyfriend of seven years, Dan, tat he would retire without taking another assignment. When he breaks that promise, Jesse expects Dan to be waiting home as usual when he returns despite arguing before he leaves. This time Dan means business and when Jesse returns, Dan has moved on and has a new boyfriend. Now alone, Jesse adopts Norman at the convincing of his friends Evan and Peter (from the first book). Even with Norman for comfort, will Jesse be able to cope seeing Dan with another man when they share the same group of friends?

This book puts the series back on track. The last book felt so dull but Jesse, Dan, and the little bundle, Norman brought it right back to cute guys and cute dogs. I would love to have more detail on Jesse’s job but the focus really was on somehow getting Jesse and Dan to face their relationship. I give this one a 3 out of 5 for getting back to the tone of the series and telling a sweet – yet standard – love story.
